Bye bye CL56, now what?

Yes I had to cancel my order from www.internetishop.com this afternoon. I don’t think it was there fault but more the fault of Compal. It hit the 30 day on my credit card for disputing orders so I had to cancel it

So now that CL56 is out of the picture, anyone have any ideas that are no more than $1550 with shipping? Must include the following

1.7 Dothan
15'+ screen (can be widescreen)
512 (DDR333)
40+ gig (5400 rpm or higher)
9700 (128 meg) Radeon mobility
4+ hour battery life

I had my eyes set for the cl56, but sadly everywhere I call they don’t have them, and if they do it const to much So I have kept out of touch of other systems for near a month now. What can hit this description (yes it can be a barebones and assembled by me)

Keep the Ideas coming. I would look this up, but I decided I also needed to post an update to my on-going problems with Compal.

Yah, I found it very surprising that NO ONE had this available. I still haven't been told by my distrib that this item is out of stock. You won't beat the pricing at Mwave...just make your order on the phone and talk em into DDR 333 (if they haven't changed that policy), etc.

you can talk them into DDR 333?

Dunno, worth a shot though, huh?

i ordered from mwave with those specs and the larger 60 gig hdd. I just ordered a separate kingston 512 pc2700 stick. all came out to 1509 with 1 day express shipping
post #9 of 20
yeah u can order the kingston from mwave too and not pay much for the extra shipping--> it's like $95 a stick.

the cl56 backorders are currently shipping. DL just got their shipment in, they started shipping last week. hopefully mine will be here on thursday if UPS didn't get too delayed from the hurricane. so i dunno why you're having a problem.

What about the Sager np3790? Seems to fit your specs. However, it is more like 1650 to 1700 bucks for that config. But this thing is beautiful. You should check it out.

you should have waited. The cl-56 cases are now coming in. The over seas suppliers have been getting hit by typoons(hmm..dosn't look right). I think they are on there 3rd or 4th one now.

Check Back with them, or someone else that sells cl56s.

well i configured a build it your self 3790 and it hit within buget, only 40 bucks higher than what I wanted providing I go with the 60 gig drive. If I go with a 40 gig drive its much cheaper.

$1,575 with 60 gig
$1,540 with 40 gig

CL56 shipped and delivered at my door with the specs I was is $1,527

So what is better, the cl56 or the 3790, now that they are in the same price range?

I just ordered a cl56 from discountlaptops.com last wednesday and its going to be delivered on thursday or friday this week. A little over a week turn around time for it so i dont know why you have waited so long for yours. You should try discountlaptops.

That's an easy one. Do a little research in the forums.

The main difference between the two is the widescreen vs normal. That should be the deciding factor right there depending on your preference.

Wide Screen... well i could care less to be honest. I have heard its a hassel with games. While I will use it for games, I have yet to see what this screen looks like with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003.

Plus I dont know if its all plastic on top, because I did have it confirmed that the CL56 palm rest is indeed metal. Also I have yet to see the weight of that 3790 with the 12 cell battery.

And the pinching thing has me very worried.

Draw or any others that can comment let me know about those issues. Keep in mind I wont be getting it from PCT, or Sager. Instead ill be getting the barebones from RJ Tech.

the weight of the 12-cell is approx. twice as much as the 6-cell, which i remember hearing was 0.8 lb? so you're looking at about 7.3 lb for a 3790 with the 12-cell, compared to 6.3 lb for a cl56.

the lcd pinching thing isn't totally widespread, but i'm pretty sure if u get one with the issue sager will send you a new one free of charge. might be a hassle though, since lots of people are currently ordering that laptop which is just off of backorder.

you may want to reference these threads for much more detail into the discussion of 3790 vs. cl56:

they are both very nice systems, generally speaking if you need widescreen, go with 3790, if u are happy with sxga+, cl56 is a good option.

well im just worried about the quality of the product, I mean the CL56 has been around for some time now and has proved its self. Maybe the screen is horrid, but when are you not looking directly at it :/

I guess i need to see a wide screen and a sxga+ side by side. Sadly no shop near me has a sxga+ :/

Grr, the money has been put back in my account, so I cant say anything about interentishop. But a waited a month and now im wondering if I should wait longer?!

Im looking into those links right now. I still want to know if the top of it is indded plasic, if so that my cross it off my list. Thats one thing I like about the cl56 is where you rest your palm it is a piece of metal
post #19 of 20
i dunno, check out draw's photo thread, there are some nice comparison shots of the cl56 and 3790. the horizontal viewing angles are better on the 3790, and vertical ones are DEF better.

for me i don't like random people walking by reading my screen (i use the laptop a lot in crowded situations) so the sxga+ actually is an added benefit.

so im leaning more towards the 3790 because it seems to have better cooling. Ive seen a few people around here that blew out there cl56, and I would assume this is because of the heat build up.

But the weird thing is no one reports heat from the cl56 except from the vent. Where as the 3790 they do say its in the palm rest where it gets warm (so maybe I have the cooling things wrong?).

I guess im going to have to post in the sager forums to get some of the questions I have answered.
