Argh, better coupon!

Well, finally got around to ordering my 9100 two weeks ago, and I'm expecting delivery on the 22nd. Only thing is, when I ordered my computer I used a 15% off coupon, and now they have a 20% off coupon. There's a special deal on the hard drive, and the exact same computer I ordered two weeks ago is now $150 cheaper.

Does anyone know if I can just call up and get them to lower the price, or would they need to cancel the order and make a new one from scratch?

This is driving me nuts now.

I can't say for certain, but I have read about cases like this where they called up and received the discount. Hopefully it works out for you.

Yeah, can't hurt to try!

I'll give them a call tonight and report back.

Even if they can't match the offer, you can always return your system and rebuy this one with teh better offer.

Same exact thing here, ordered mine on the 1st and now theres a 20% off deal. Anyway, it's 135$ cheaper now, but thats with less ram(was free upgrade to 512 before) and no free printer. I called up and they would not change anything, so I fgure I just got a 135$ printer, and i can ebay my ram since I bought some from New-egg.

Yes, most of the offers tend to be pretty balanced. When, for instance, they offer 20% off they generally offer little else. When they offer less % off you see them throw in things like printers or digicams. Dell's profit margin's for specific models doesn't vary by much, hence their offers tend to be pretty comparable.

I'm pretty sure i read somewhere that if you call and request a price "challenge" of sorts, they'll configure your computer again and if there is a difference in price from when you' initially purchased it, they'll give you the difference. Maybe it was a post from a while ago where I remember seeing this. But also, you only get one of these "price adjustments" I think. Just a thought. Its worth a shot calling!

Well, I called Dell last night and got some good news. I explained my whole situation to a (surprisingly helpful) customer service rep, and just asked her if it would be possible to apply the coupon without me having to cancel this order and place a new one. After a fair amount of time on hold, she tracked down a supervisor and gave me these options.

1) Cancel this order and place a new one, they will apply the 20% off coupon without any trouble. Of course, it's a whole new order, so they'd better.

2) This is the tricky one. Apparently they can't modify an order once it's in production, but what they can do is give you a price match once your computer is actually delivered. She entered everything into the computer, gave me a case number, and told me to call for the 5% credit as soon as I had my computer in my hands.

So here's the trick, i think:
If a better coupon comes along while yours is in production, call them with the coupon and tell them you'd like them to credit it after the fact. Apparently, it operates similar to those 30-day price matches a lot of retail stores do, where if the price drops on something within 30 days of you buying it, you can get a refund.

So, happy for ending for me.

Nice job . I think your Dell experience is completely dependent on who you get on the other end of the line. There seems to be a high degree of variability in the quality of the service reps.

Well, i would be weary of that, because according to Dell's price match policy, they will only credit you the difference if the base price of the system has changed. They will not take promotions, coupons, etc. into account. If there is a price drop in the starting price of the system that is not due to promotions like the Red Tag Sale or mail-in-rebates, then they will honor the price match. If I were you, i would clarify this with the rep, and then decide whether you would rather wait a little longer and get the credit or if you would just want to stick with this order.

Got my 9100 today, so I thought I'd just post an update on the coupon situation. I called Dell Online Customer Service, spent a few minutes explaining the situation to the rep (which should've been in the case file, I gave him the case number), and he put me on hold to check with a supervisor.

Took a few minutes on hold, but I got the extra 5% credited to my card without any hassle. So despite all the nightmare stories I've heard about dealing with Dell (and I definitely don't dismiss them), I've had a pretty smooth buying experience. *crosses fingers*

The true test, of course, will be if I have any serious problems with the new computer, but for now I'm feeling pretty damn good about my purchase.

It expired last week, unfortunately. I think it only lasted three days. Keep checking fatwallet.com , though, they pop up once or twice a month at least, it seems.
