Anyone tried loading the new Catalyst 2.5 drivers?

I see ATI released the 2.5 Catalyst drivers a few days ago. I didn't see any other posts on these, (perhaps I missed it), and wondered if anyone had tried loading them yet on 5660?

If so, what were the results?

TIA,

I believe I downloaded them before I left UD so I will try them on here sometime later and let you know (if no one else does before, lol). Have a great night!

Catalyst 2.5 Driver Report

I just downloaded the drivers. Be sure to de-install the existing drivers before you try an installation of the new ones.

I got turned around a little by the fact that the install shield looks for an install cd during installation. Just point it to the folder where the ati driver files are installed (c:/ati/...)

They work fine, though I haven't tried them with any games. There is an orientation command in the ati control panel as well -- which I don't remember seeing in the older panel.

That's it. All works now as before.

i installed the new drivers and so far they've worked great! I also had a little trouble with the install wizard. I think I ended up installing the drivers manually without any problems.

got the 6218's

Got the drivers from www.s-seven.net.

I didn't delete the existing drivers. Apparently I didn't need to as my 3DMark scores increased by about 150 on the drivers alone. The driver file at that site is an .exe that does everything for you.

I installed them as well, running great :-) and 3dmark went up by a lil as well.

I downloaded those drivers from s-seven.net and it didn't really worked for me when I was playing MOHAA. For some reason when to many ai players are on the screen with lots of explosions the frames just freezes and then goes on like nothing happened. It might just be me but I uninstalled those drivers and used the drivers that came with my 8886 and it worked fine after that.

Is there any thing special that needs to be done to install the Cat 3's?

I tried right off of ATI's site, but it wouldn't work on my 5660.

I think the Cat 3's require DirextX 9.0. I have been told 9.0 is not quite stable in some instances from some software development people, so I am holding off until 9 is stable.

According to the game developers I know, DX 9.0 isn't ready for prime time. A lot of people who have loaded it aren't having problems, but a lot of developers are. New DX releases usually aren't really ready until the a or b point release. Since I do game programming myself, I don't want to take a chance .

If you have loaded it and have no problems, great. Of course there aren't many programs out to take any advantage of DX 9 anyway apart from some demos and a game or two.

Ah, Microsoft, can't live with them, can't live without them .

Yeah you can load up cat 3.0 on the 8886
First extract the installation files (after that, do no try to use the included ati setup), then remove your current driver and software using the add/remove software propmt and the device manager.
Reboot
Windows will load with its crappy standard drivers, go to the device manager, search for the display driver, click update driver (Or install), in the prompt when asked, click select location of the driver, go to the installation folder, then drivers, select the directory, then many devices will be listed, select the radeon 9000 pro, ok ok to all prompts, maybe it will ask you to reboot, but before rebooting, go to the install folder, look for software, ati panel, install the panel, reboot.

Right on! The ati cat3 drivers are ready.
(It runs very stable with them, and a bit faster, if anyone wants benchmarks, tell me)

Oh, and you dont need dx9 installed to load them

They shoudl install the same way with the 5660, although i cant test (since its the same display chipset)

Thanks Zachquiel!

The Cat3's installed on my 5660 with the help of your instructions.

Speaking of cat 3.0's... Counterstrike in directx seems to have a problem with resolutions, since they will expand a lot more, out of the boundaries of the screen, but opengl seems to not have this problem, ill dig into it, and post later.

I found very interesting information! "ATI mobility fire GL 9000" GPU is improved and configurated version based on " ATI Radeon mobility 9000" and developed for use in professional class mobile workstation running power-hungry 3D applications. Both have the same platform and also the same feauters.
I wonder...maybe drivers for "fireGL 9000" will work with "Radeon 9000"?

For reference see:

Most likely they will not... the fire gl is an opengl beefed up card for workstations... CAD and engineering programs and the like. The 9000 is made for gaming and general use. Lol, if you do try it and it works, by all means post about your experiences :-) But be careful in trying it if you do...

Fire comment and new Cat 3's

@Korben, usually the Fire drivers will not work with a non-fire card. Some versions will not even install. There are some hacks out there to force them to install, but I have never found it worth the trouble.

Speaking of new drivers, yet another release of the Cat 3's have been posted on the ATI site. Since I have to be careful what I load because of my development work, I was wondering if anyone else had tried them yet?

I tried the 6255 drivers from s-seven. They installed okay, and Windows Xp desktop behaves correctly, but in World War II Online the messaging system was illegible, and other strange corrupt-looking effects. I changed back to the 6178 driver that came with my 8886 and all worked correctly again.

When I installed the 6255 drivers I made sure to comment out all the Dell and Compaq entries in the .inf, as well as comment out all the M6 and M7 entries. I don't know what's wrong.

Any ideas? I'd like to get a few more FPS if possible.
TIA.
