How to print with wireless at home?

Thread Starter
I have a Desktop PC on broadband, and a Microsoft Wireless Basestation with built in firewall. I am using an HP Laptop with built in 802.11g. Both systems have firewalls, antivirus, and Windows XP Home with SP2.

Could someone please tell me how to setup my PC's so I can print from my laptop while im away from desktop? Also, accessing files on my desktop from my laptop would be great too. I am using the 128 bit encryption, with all the bells and whistles, so Im not worried about any intruders hacking in. I live on a dead end street in the country.

Can anyone please walk me through this?
Thanks
PS I have a Canon i960 printer (if that matters)

activate file and printer sharing on the desktop with the printer connected, share out the printer and any directories you want to share (right click on the printer/directories and click sharing)

ok, where do i do that? Control panel? Printer properties?
Thanks for the quick response

it's usually already enabled, so just open Windows Explorer or My Computer, whichever you prefer, and navigate to the directories you want shared, right click on them, click sharing, and turn sharing on for that directory, repeat for the printer in control panel, printers

My laptop cannot find the printer, it asks for the name of it

Lol...i enabled my printer sharing and other sharing. What happens is my desky detects my lappy and i can copy files back and forth from the desktop. When i try to access the desky from the lappy...fat chance. Same with the printer. it just doesn't detect it.

But my network is setup a bit differently...little help?

I have a Netgear 54g router.

Desky: Win2k SP4
Lappy: XP Pro SP2
Set-Up: The cable modem is connected to the router, the desky is connected to the router via an RJ45 cable. The lappy is wireless.

abf: win2k and xp don't always network together so well, i've had serious problem trying to make them work, i'm surprised you got as much working as you did

Hannibal: if you go to My Network Places, can you see the other computer?

I got it to work!! I had to find the name of the printer in my desktop, then find the name under the "find a printer" from my lappy's printer setting. It spools it to my desktop like ZZAAAP!

Yeah, now that I think about it I forgot to mention that you have to navigate to the other computer via your laptop and connect to the printer, but using the naming thing works too. Congrats, you have now successfully networked two computer. Something that many people are completely incapable of doing.
