Don't Order The New Sony GRT laptop YET

I was thinking about putting this in my original post but felt I need to make another one to explain the significance for doing so.

Apparently the grt series 170 and below models DO NOT have the Xbrite technology that the GRT 190G has which is currently not available until July (pre-order on the 22nd of June).

I am providing the link to the pdf version of the 190G specs.

190G PDF

Notice how they specifically advertise having the Xbrite technology along with the GIGA pocket which is basically Sony's version of being able to record TV shows etc to your hard drive along with some other nice video/digital editing options.

NOW here is the link to the GRT 170 model

GRT 170 PDF

Looking very closely they DO NOT advertise having the Xbrite technology . They just state that it is high resolution , and it DOES not come with GIGA POCKET. If it doesn't says it has it , IT DOESNT. So it looks like the only thing you are getting is a UXGA screen which is most likely from the GRX series and the Geforce 5600 GO video card.

So in a nutshell , those that were interested in ordering the grt series model laptop. Hold off until later this month when the 190G is available for pre-order.

IF YOU ORDER NOW YOU WILL NOT BE GETTING THE NEW LCD SCREEN NOR THE CAPABILITY OF TV SHOW/EDITING OPTIONS THAT COME WITH GIGA POCKET.

All in all, It's almost like you have to be looking for these kind of things because I was very close to actually ordering one , but just by chance I happened to just compare the two PDF sites, and noticed that. I would have been extremely pissed off if I ordered one because I would be thinking that I am getting all the new stuff.

Here is the part of my conversation with a Sony Sales Associate named Joey online via live sales help.

You: so the 170 model does not have the xbrite technology nor GIGA POCKET from what it looks like on the PDF sheet.

Some of you may be saying " well duh" , but I'll be honest and say that I was thinking this grt series had all the new things they were releasing on the 190G on them also.

But for those of you that were thinking like me hopefully you will read this before making any order for this laptop.

Re: Don't Order The New Sony GRT laptop YET

Thanks for sorting that out!

Suckers! But what do you expect from their messy website and tech support. Reminds me of, when I tried to get some info about their LCD notebook screens. I sent an email to tech support. They told me they had not have any info on that and asked me to go to a local retailer. The retailer looked at me as if I were insane when I told him the story. Of course, he couldn't help me either and referred me back to tech support....

Dire , you have a point , but alot of people will just read the news and go right over thinking that is what they are getting . I was so caught up in trying to get specs and technical stuff that I just went over what was most important doing the wrong thing ASSUMING.

Stupid is as stupid does......................

Not yet. Except Sony's sales team are probably on the same level as Alienware. They are absolutely clueless as to any details regarding this laptop or when it will be available. I was told multiple times by different reps that it would already be available at least for ordering by now , along with actually being released in the first two weeks of July.

Now the story seems to be that it got pushed back and they won't be doing a pre-order until sometime in late July. Yes only a pre-order. Some reps even denied that this laptop is even being released until I reminded them that the information on the news site is open to the public to which they reply with claims that they don't have any further information or they can't help you.

The service is really horrible, you can go online via sales chat assistance on sonystyle.com and find out for yourself , but you'll probably get a different story also so good luck.

Some could say this is typical of large corporations like Sony, which I would have to agree. But, I am getting sick of getting the run around about spending MY own damn money.

HI Albert,
I agree with your your comments re Sony. I have been researching for several years to buy a desktop replacement notebook and looked closely at Sony's GRX & GRV series.
The GRT190G looks good in some respects but I can promise that Sony has hobbled it like all their notebooks by being cheap with components such as hard drives and RAM.
The 60gig HDD will be a 4200rpm unit and not a 5400 or the newest Hitachi 7200rpm units and the RAM will be DDR266 instead of the newer DDR333 or 400mb.
I will hold out til later this year for the new AREA 51M or the exact equivalent from another seller for less as it appears to be the only contender on which I can get the new 800mhz bus, 128mb video card, either9600pro or Nvidia5600 GO, the DDR400RAM and a 7200rpm HDD. I dont really like the Sager8890 design but I must have a 16"UXGA screen.

I already knew this and do not care, WHY? because I'm not anal retentive and want the OMG type LCD. any time I'll be doing SERIOUS graphical/movie watching/etc it will be hooked up to my 21" CRT.
