I would ask pctorque about this.

I find this very strange that i have only ever had a few lockups(all software related, mostly tribes vengeance)and you guys have had so many. what version of the bios are you using?
I'm pretty sure that almost all of us have the 1.01 version and the newest firmware. It's strange how we have such different issues. So Air, yours crashes after it's been on for a long time? Does it ever crash at startup? Mine NEVER crashes once it survives startup but it ALWAYS crashes when I do a cold boot.

I've been talking to David Liu at Sager and I think that if you guys email them too, we'll be able to get another firmware that keeps the fans on at startup but also does the stuff the new firmware does. I think that this would eliminate my crashes completely and would probably make sure that no one else starts to get issues like me. We could also ask them to make the fans cool slightly more aggressively and get rid of the cut off temperature (it's 35C right now) so that the fans are always on at least low speed. From what I've gathered, crashes almost always happen when the fans are off or just after they have been off for a while.

Are you sure that's the problem. It would be a striking blow if the president returned a 4750 for something else.
Oh no no no, I'm not going to return my 4750, that's blasphemy. I'm going to make Sager put out a firmware that takes care of everyone's overheating problems. If mine still won't work properly, then I'll just send it in for repairs because I'll know that it's fudged.

And yes, I'm absolutely certain that if the fans would stay on during startup, my machine wouldn't crash. If it still does (which I doubt) then I'll send it in for repairs.

Ogre, I'll say it one more time: try the firmware Adam released that puts the fans on full blast at post...at least it'll help you troubleshoot and resolve your issues more quickly (know whether you need to repair it or not).

I doubt the CPU itself is overheating considering even with the old settings MobileMeter would show the lockup at 47*, and it's happening (although less) at lower temperatures now. I have a feeling that maybe either the surrounding socket is overheating, or something on the mobo is. Either way, I'm not sure the solution should be constantly droning fans - it's already somewhat embarassing when people look over at me when they first spin on at 40*C in class, I'd hate to think how useless this would be as a true "laptop" with the constant noise and interference it would be putting out if the fans remained on.

Hopefully they can accurately determine what the problem is and find a way to remotely resolve the problem, or know how to quickly repair it upon arrival so we don't have to keep sending it in like wbeck. However, things are beginning to look grim and I'm losing faith in DTR notebooks after my A51-m smoked and this one locks up. From now on I'm going Centrino or at least for something massive enough to house adequate cooling fans and heatpipes like the XPS or 9100.

I love this notebook, but I will request a trade for the 3790 if this keeps up, I don't want to constantly have to worry about whether I'm going to lose data or have a permanent meltdown/failure.

uhg, guys, I dont know what to say. I t stinks youre having the trouble that you are. I think my lappy is finally working the way it is supposed to. I got my AS5 in the mail today and i've been debating whether or not I should put it on. I sent an email to Sager about what their policy specifically is about AS5 on the cpu. THis is what they said
Quote:
It will void any damage related , if only will damage to the CPU then the CPU will not cover.

So, I can put on the AS5, but if the processor smokes, dont come running to Sager for help, i guess. However, I think i'm gonna wait another week or so, to make sure this thing is running perfectly for sure, before I mess with the internals. However, being the fiddling man that I am, I'm having trouble restraining myself from cracking this thing open and seeing what I can do!

Ogre and Air, I really reccommend sending in your lappys. Your problem is not normal. Like at all. My laptop hasnt crashed since the day after I got it back (it did crash, but I think it was windows' fault, i reformatted and havent had a problem in a week). You will be w/o a lappy for a little while, maybe two weeks, but weigh the options: two weeks of no lappy, or the rest of the school year being frustrated?

Air, the 3790 is a beautiful machine. If you ditch your 4750 for the cooler(literally), slimmer model, I wont hate you.
I might hate myself, but only a little - that baby looks nice. My concern is that so many people experience the same issue and they have obviously treated it as overheating. Keep in mind this was my first lockup since the new firmwares (Saturday) so I'm not sure if you've given yours enough "break in time" to see what happens yet wbeck. I wish you the best, however!

And f* 2 weeks , I'll just 2nd day it to them and expect the same back !
Ogre,

I don't think that a firmware update or anything like it would fix your laptop.
It cannot be normal that your computer keeps on crashing .

BTW, Air is right .... the first firmware makes your fan run at full blast @ startup.
So, if didn't work with the old firmware , why should it work with the new one ?

Better RMA it ...... you will get it back in 1 - 2 weeks.

It seems like it's case design apparently.

alright, AS5 has been applied. I stayed up til 4 am this morning applying it (started at like 2) and "testing it" (i.e. playing ut2k) BUt I think it works. the interesting thing is that the keyboard feels warmer, while the processor right now is at a "fridgid" 36*C. My hd is at 46 however. So, here's what I think. The processor is staying cooler right now, so fans dont have to work so much, however, it means that the hd is not being cooled as much. I hope this is ok.

I'm gonna switch it to "always on" and see what my hd does.

yeah, almost 20 minutes later, with my processor throttled to 2ghz full time, my processor is up to 51*C and my hd is down to 41*C. interesting. I wonder how this AS5 will affect the computer. hopefully not too badly. 46*C is nothing to worry about, but I what the potential is. I'm gonna switch back to portable setting and try defragging, which is a pretty hd intensive activity.

actually, the hd after my defrag was only at 47*C at its highest and the cpu to only 40*C, so I'm not too concerned anymore. And by the way, my temps right now are 36*C for cpu and 42*C for the hd.

Keep in mind that I only have the 3200+. THough, i wouldnt think that it would keep much cooler than the 3400+

anyway, just thought I would let yall know.
I bought the recent one or the current model of the 4750 i guess they fixed some things at first it was way way too loud cause mine was always on then I enabled powernow everything is quite and pretty cool i kept it on for over a day got slightly warm but that was all. I use it when playing games it throtles to the full max. Powernow is great you should try it it should defently lower you idle temp my is just 41 without anything imagine if I was able to put as5 Im only doing that if mayaman2 shows me cause I dont want to screw it up.
Ogre, wbeck, any recent updates? I have yet to hear back from Sager about the new solution. Also, have your problems gotten any worse Ogre? Have you started to get any wbeck?

Keep in touch Don't let the thread die!

hi! well, so far, my computer has been working fine. no problems, 12 days after getting it back. 5 days ago, I put on the AS5, i think i did an ok job, not great, cuz my results arent drastic, (look above for them, I already posted them) but I didnt kill it which is good. I think i'm in the clear. *knocks on wood* I always keep the back propped up an inch though ,just to give it an easier time. I've brought this thing to class, brought in on a greyhound bus to lynchburg (about an hour and a half from here). it's spent a bit of time in my back pack, getting bumped around, and no ill effects. It's spent some time gaming, getting up to 60-65*C and no ill effects. From a cold boot, (like this morning) It seems to be working fine. right now my temps are 35*C cpu and 33*C hd, which is not bad at all. I like the new firm ware, it keeps my lappy nice and chilly I must note I do have the 3200+ unlike all of you with the 3400+, which may add to increased heat on ur side though. So far, I have been VERY happy the last two weeks. Ogre, and Air, my best to you in all your troubles and I wish that they may be chased away very quickly!
My temps aren't that low. 43 cpu, 40 hd, for doing web browsing. I lost the ability to use powernow settings though.

I just had cold booted when I posted those number, it hadnt had time to heat up, although, now, I've been doing web browsing and posting and stuff for 2 hrs and i'm only at 37*C cpu and 41*C hd. which i guess is pretty good. I watch the temp tick up to 40, fans come on for about 1 minute, watch mobile meter tick down to 35, shut off, tick up to 40, on, 35, off..... man I gotta do some homework....

I'm waiting for Clevo to finish making a new firmware just for me I know, I'm awesome.

But ... since I've been having problems with crashes at startup, I decided to leave my 4750 on all the time. It was on for over 2 days straight with no crashes, but today it finally crashed. I think it's because I was trying to use powernow for extended periods of time again, but it didn't work. I think that eventually I'm going to have to send it in (I'm almost certain that something has been damaged by heat and is causing these crashes), but I'm hoping that a new firmware will postpone that day until it is convenient for me to ship it in. Except for these annoying although not yet fatal crashes, I love my machine to death (haha) and it performs beautifully.
