Yeah, it does and I just hope that Sager will fix it for me :(

That's what I like to hear some corportate espionage. Just remember I would probably be that reckless.

Hmmm..now extremenotebooks have good prices and offer the moble version your talking about. I wished someone here has one so we could get the temp measurements and see if its making a huge difference..

Just ordered my replacement 4750. This time with a 80gb 5400rpm drive instead of the 7200. Seems like the price went down. I am going to see how the temps stack up with the new fan firmware, if I will even need it though with the slower hard drive.

@menator: You need it. Look at my specs!

I was using Neverwinter Nights and the machine went up to 60C and the machine frose and did not react anymore. I am only setting the soundsettings!

Does these 3d games need something special or is it just wait until next bios?
I am using the latest patches/drivers for directx and video.

That isn't good. I love neverwinter nights, just got done the the beggars nest. How long is your computer on until it freezes? Are you running the latest fan firmware that was just released?
The firmware probably wouldn't help with that since by that temperature his fans would be going full blast...maybe it would help prevent buildup before that...

If that's the case, then the only way these will be stable is with fans full speed 100% of the time, which makes these desktops, not laptops...I doubt my professors would appreciate this thing drowning them out.

BTW. I just found out that in my Laptop there is no AMD Athlon 64 but a Mobile AMD Athlon 64 processor wo thermo pasta. I found it out by the code on the processor if the code starts with ADA is the normal one AMA is the mobile one.

if it's one of the first 4750s, judging by your "bought in july 2004" in your sig, I wonder if we all have one of those, and if it is the actual "mobile" processor or the "dtr" processor. this thing gets too hot though, I would think for it to be the mobile. Was the true mobile processor even out in july?
Hopefully Sager will have the firmware ready today, I could really use it.

Acoording to the spec they made two types AMA and AMN. AMA is the Mobile 64 DTR and AMN is the 62W model. The one I have is a AMA. So the DTR model.

On the AMD webSite I found a couple of documents on Thermal and how to do this. I looked at what they done with my machine. They applied a Thermo Pad instead of Thermo Grease. ONLY Thermal Grease is recommended on the AMD64 and NO Pads. The Pads are for Duron processors etc. If you would like to see for yourself I have included the link where I found it. So please people that build our laptops look at this as well. See discussion about Thermal Pads and Thermal Grease at http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/...9_7203,00.html

BTW I do not recommend that everyone is going to open up there machine and start ripping out the heatsink. If you never done this than do not start at it now. Wrongly applied Grease can damage the CPU or even blow it up when it comes in contact when the contact points of the CPU.

I don't know if this makes a difference for a laptop, but my desktops AMD 64 CPU came pre-packaged with a fan and heatsink.. The heatsink (with fan on top of it) has the thermal pad on it (rather than greese).. So far I OC it by 12.5% with stock cooling (the heatsink and fan combo) and have had no freeze-ups, etc.

I guess it's a lot different for laptops, but the thermal pad works good on my end..

If you read the article it says at the end of page 14: "For lidless processors, such as AMD Athlon MP, AMD Athlon XP, and AMD Duron processors, thermal grease is recommended only for short-term use; for long-term use AMD recommends thermal pads." This leads me to belive the article is not refering to DTR or Mobile athlon64 processors in the statement: "Thermal grease is recommended for long-term usage on lidded parts, such as
AMD Athlon 64 or AMD Opteron processors. These processors are lidded, that is, the processor die is covered with a lid, and it is the lid, not the processor die, that comes into direct contact with the heatsink."

Which is unfortunate for you guys who have already applied AS5. I don't know what the grease will do "longterm" but, it seems to be working well for you guys in the short term, anyway.

If you look at the pictures that are on the website from AMD there is NO difference between the mobile variant and DTR variant. The casings are the same. In the Thermal Design Guide it tells you on pg 33 wich Grease material they recommend for it.
So you see now why I made the last remark. It is a confusing subject and therefore only for people that has had many experiences in building pc's. I even checked with a friend that works at an official repair centre. They told me that acoording to their infodocs that were supplied by AMD they started applying the grease instead of the pads on all of their AMD Athlon 64 models. Some with success and others without. But they can be wrong as well, who knows only time will tell.

I guess I am lucky, I have heat issues but not anything major
At first it froozed because it was on a flat surface. Now I spread my legs and it stays on for days and its at around 55 degrees, if idle. The machine is not hot enough to get burnt on my lap, just the touchpad gets real hot for me
post #96 of 174
the thermal grease is supposed to last for years. it is rather thick and it isn't going anywhere. its kind of hard to spread it evenly. As for tutorial of applying it I have one but I need a new photo host site. Damn you photodump, making my life more complex.

My 4750's all better now I think. I'm crossing my fingers hoping that the firmware does its job but so far so good!

Yay, Ogre!

I got an email from Sager, after emailing them about the heat issue. This is what I got back:
Quote:
We have the firmware to take care the overheat problem, it will make the fan running to avoid the overheat, once i got the firmware i will mail to you.

"once i got the firmware i will mail to you." <<I don't know what that means, considering the firmware is already out. You would think that the guys working at the company would have the frimware already, considering we have it. UNLESS Sager is currently working on a newer better version. Bet, hey, looks like I get it emailed to me! if, when it comes, it is any different than the one currently out, I'll let you guys know.

Look at that Athlon64 technical specification sheet:
http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/cont...docs/30430.pdf

On page 19 and 20 you can read, that all Mobile Athlon64 processors (DTR included) start with AM in their OPN number. The third letter in the OPN code is important. "A" stands for DTR, "N" for the 62W version and "D" for the 35W LV version.

Edit: Sorry. I posted to fast. My information is old information !
