When your system first boots it should tell you what BIOS version you have. To obtain updates you must download them from Alienware's support section on their site.

Only if you have disabled silent mode.
When the AW logo comes up press del.

Caution: Improperly Updating Or Flashing The Bios Cmos Chip On A Motherboard Can Damage The Motherboard To The Point Of Rendering It Useless. Accordingly, You Should Perform This Bios Update Only With The Assistance Of An Alienware Technical Support Agent. Performing This Bios Update Without Such Assistance Will Void Your System's Warranty.

Additionally, unless your trying to fix something that a new bios version addresses, do not flash your bios

This is so true, nothing like applying a high voltage charge to a chip that may or may not "take it."
