My 8886 shuts down when I wiggle the screen

Seriously, it just shuts down. Then, when I hold the power button down--no matter how long I hold it down, it still won't come back on. If I unplug it, it's typically okay to restart the computer, but I have to wait a few seconds.

The same weird shutdown thing happened when I plugged four things into the USB ports too... I somewhat typically keep four things plugged in there (printer, scanner, mouse and cooling pad) fyi.

I'm baffled. It seems similar to a problem I've heard of people having w/ standby. But I've never used standby mode or hibernate or anything like that on this computer. Then again, I think those standby issues were w/ Win98 too. Then again, I don't think it's software related b/c all I have to do is wiggle the screen back or forward and it shuts down. Sounds like hardware....

I bough this thing in November 2002; hoped to never have to send it back... any clues? Anyone?

Does the same problem occur on battery power?

...Guy goes to the doctor and says, "Dr. it hurts when I do this." Doctor says, "Dont do that."

You could have a bad connector cable going from mainboard to screen, and if the power leads were to short then that would explain why the laptop wouldn't boot until unplugged. Most power supplys have a short protection so if something shorts out the system will immediately shut off and lock itself in power down mode to prevent more damage.

Thanks for the ideas guys, here's some clarification:

I think JeffL might be on to something. Periodically, even when I'm not moving the screen, it'll flicker like a CRT that is having a power spike. When I move the screen, it flickers really bad--and I don't have to move it much to get that effect (just barely touch it is all). I haven't had it shut down at all since I posted, but I haven't exactly been testing it.

harrelld, no difference between battery and AC.

Pistoff, thanks for the advice, but I'm not wiggling the screen for fun. I'm only moving it to plug in a USB scanner or printer or maybe to do something else back there.

Any other ideas?

I'd go with JeffL on this one. A bad or loose connection.

flex cable

Sounds like you may have a broekn wire in the flex cable. The flex cable carries the video feed from the video card to the LCD. I have an HP laptop that developed the same problem. If it's under warranty send it back to Sager!

Yea, I would have to say back connection either by connection. Contact Sager on that to either get their advice on reseating or repairing.

Thanks guys. I got an RMA and sent it fedex yesterday to Sager. So far I'm impressed w/ the service. Of course, I'd rather the thing just work flawlessly until it become totally obselete, but at least their willing to stand behind their products.

I'm just glad it happened under warranty. I'm not too into digging around inside a lappy. But I would give it a shot if it meant sending it and paying for tech time.

It seems that every time I muster the b@lls to tinker in some electronic toy/gadget/tool, it turns out to be way easier to mess with and/or fix than I thought it would be.

Perhaps I should go out an buy a soldering iron.... nah...

Well, I got it back from Sager and it works flawlessly. They even updated the bios for me.
