ATTN All 4750 Owners ... Again!

While Sager is working on updating the firmware for the fans, here's what you can do to prevent crashing (it's been working for me).

Have your laptop startup using the "laptop/portable" power scheme. Either do this right when Windows loads up or before you shutdown. In case you still ave no idea how to do this right-click on your desktop and click properties. Go to the screen saver tab and Click the "power" button. Select the appropriate power scheme from the pull-down menu.

This will warm up the machine gradually. Sometimes the fans don't kick in quickly enough to keep the DTR Athlons we have from overheating nearby components.

Once your laptop has been on for 5-10 minutes or when the fans kick in for the first time, switch back to the "always on" power scheme as usual.

Also a notebook cooler and as5 helps but I don't think it is necessary as long as you prop up the back an inch or two and make sure that your room temperature doesn't get above 75F.

Good luck 4750 Club Members!

I never had any problems when it was on always on, or moble/laptop. i use always on now though, so the fans stay on.

This is only if your 4750 crashes soon after startup. If yours doesn't do that then just keep it on always on

I am happy you got a fix for it. Mine is still kicking ass though. I do like the idea of a possible firmware upgrade that would allow you to turn on max fans at will like the 8790.
That isn't what the firmware is going to fix ogre; it's going to address the fact that the CPU overheats during boot and gets too hot before the fans have a chance to spin up and level the heat off. That's why with the new firmware the fans spin up at post (boot).

Also, what you're describing isn't really a good solution (I hate to tell ya ). The problem with Always On is that it cooks your CPU, the problem with Laptop/Portable is that it cooks your mobo. You're just letting your cpu chill while your mobo cooks for a bit then switching the order. What they need is to take the firmware that Adam gave us and modify it so the fans run at a low setting rather than shutting off completely.

Still no freezes on the new firmware so all looks good. If it's just heat then I'm glad I don't have to send it back in, although dissapointed that they wouldn't (Sager, Clevo, Hypersonic, etc.) be able to figure out that it was an issue in testing. I like having it quiet with no fans, but I don't think that'll be an option unfortunately .

well if you somehow can hack the bios and slap the low voltage chip in there I bet you would rarely hear the fans.
I doubt you'd have to hack the bios, just wait for them to release something.

I think what's people have been failing to ask is whether the lockups are from CPU overheat or somewhere else in the case. I've locked up at 47*C according to MobileMeter. So if it's elsewhere, what options are there?

Then it might be software related for you.

Does this laptop (4750) have that much of a problem with Heat? I was getting ready to purchase one but after reading this thread (and others) .... maybe not. I am not a hard-core gamer but I do need it for Large Assembly Design/Cad/Cam work.

As soon as I can get this firmware workin I bet all of my heat problems will be taken care of. The heat isn't bad on the outside, it's just that the fans weren't aggressive enough to keep everything cool on the inside.

Alright, what you want to do is order the 4750 from xtremenotebooks to get the mobile athlon 64. its a 62 watt chip so it should create a lot less heat. If xtremenotebook had offered that I would have went with them.

Mayaman, it might not be the CPU causing the overheat and lockups but other items in the laptop like the northbridge, ram, etc. The new firmwares seem to help. I didn't get any lockups doing stuff (SageTV) on the fan max "alpha" one Adam kindly gaves us Friday, I'll keep you posted whether the new one performs as well. Still getting NICE idle temps of 36* and 38* for CPU and HD.

I love PCTorque and would recommend them, great experience. The mobile 64 would be a nice plus, however...I can't argue with better thermals. What'd I'd like is a 3400+ ultra low voltage...turn this thing into a Ferrari 3200 on steroids.

Sweet. Ferrari 3200 on steroid lol. I am sure that would get a ton of peoples attention. Might bring back more love to the 4750. Its good that its working for you. I just hope its a good long term solution.

I'd suggest you do the same Maya, apparently the problem was the fans kicking in too late causing overheating (http://notebookforums.com/showpost.p...0&postcount=17).

You shouldn't chance a meltdown
Does the new one make the fan run full speed all the time?
Thread Starter
no, it's on low all the time and it kicks up when needed
post #17 of 22
It kicks in at 40* and stays on until 35* or something like that. So on full time, but on low.

mayaman, How is http://xtremenotebooks.com/ on the "Dead Pixel" policy? Will they be so kind as to Scan for "Dead Pixels" BEFORE shipping? What has your experience been with this company?
wow, this is the first time ive ever had my cpu down to 37* ideling. and its almost 25*c in my room (76*f)

I haven't ordered from them, but when I was talking to them they were rather helpful. I was considering them but I ended up with pctorque since I though it wouldn't take as long since there located in florida. Plus I kind of know their staff. I think there dead pixel policy is the same like 5 or something. You realise you can always say its dead on arrival if there are dead pixels and send it back.
