I think this is what you're looking for. Download and run the program and it will display your Windows XP key.

They key is encrypted in the registry, you'll need to download a program that will show it to you in plain text. Bear in mind that XP requires you to register it, so you can't use it on more than one machine for more than a few weeks.

http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml is the best utility I've found for pulling out the number. I've used it myself when I was going to reinstall and didn't have the sleeve anymore.

Google is your friend - "xp key finder" came up with a number of links.

Or, your friend could be honest and buy a copy for legal use.

If that's an OEM version of Windows, it probably isn't going to work on the Aopen anyway.

Why isn't he honest, I reinstalled my Acer with an XP Pro that came with my IBM X31.

Acer came with XP Home and the IBM is now into 1000000000 pieces, so for me everthing is legal here.

It will not work for the AOPEN system.

The windows XP Home / Pro for the consumer required that you activate it with microsoft. So if he installed in the AOPEN system, he has 30 days of usage before it will no longer work.

Only the Windows XP Pro Corporate version doesn't require the activation.

Uh, no. I went to Google and searched for What is my Windows XP key? and this was the third hit. Use it or don't, I don't care.

I believe sisoft sandra will show your windows key.

As an interesting note..... if you buy an OEM version of Windows.. it can only be used with the hardware with which it was purchased. SO if you buy a laptop with Win XP Pro and it dies(laptop) and you want to buy another w/o XP Pro.. according to the OEM license you cannot. I did not know this and only learned it recently.

I'm wondering where are the MODs now...

That's the case with most versions of Windows, isn't it?

It happens when you buy with a notebook, for example. The retail version is the "always work" version. OEMs use special versions to adapt WIN for their purposes/hardware.

I bough an OEM win XP and the qualifying hardware was a $2.00 USB 2.0 cable they assured me was XP compatible. Installed without a hitch on my Compaq Presario 5461...
