My 700m is going back!

they're sending me a new one. I finally found a problem with this laptop. It doesn't show up too well in this picture, but the paint on the right side is "rubbing" off or something. I don't know if it was like this since I got it, but I just now noticed it. There's definitely some sort of a black "streaking" going on there. I just called Dell, and they offered to paint it, or send me a new laptop. There is no way that I'm going to send it back, to get it painted...so they're sending me a new one. I was somewhat hessitant, since this is not a major problem, and this laptop has been great....but it was definitely noticeable.

On a related note, does anyone know if I can just swap out the hard drive, and not worry about Windows conflicts? I'm assuming that since it'll be the same laptop, that I can just put the hard drive in the new one without any problems.

Sorry to hear about the paint issue, and when mine arrives next week I'll be sure to keep an eye on it. As far as the hard drive swap goes, you will probably need to ghost the data from the old to the new unless Dell agrees to the swap (not likely).

If the harddrives are the same size then go ahead and swap them. They'll never know.

Sure they will, that's what the serial numbers are for.

Originally i had gotten the 40GB with my 5100 then i ordered a 5150/30GB, I swapped the drives with no problem, only needed to install the drivers. I did the same again with my 700m and just needed to install the drivers.

BTW are you getting the new 700m immediately? Like you don't have to wait around a month to get it? (The wait time)

Um...sure. I guess I should be ready for Dell to call any minute now since I've done this many times in the past couple of years.

I suppose a more appropriate response should be YMMV, because not everyone has been as fortunate as you. Regardless, picking up a copy of ghost is a splendid idea.

I'd just swap it. They wouldn't probably notice, and it will be much less hassle than having to store a ghost image somewhere, then restoring it, blah blah blah...

They said that I should get it within 3-4 business days. They'll send me my new one, and I'll send this one back in the same box. I've done the same procedure with Dell many times, but never had to replace the HDD.

govtcheez,
do you have regular mail-in warrenty? cause' i thought the warrenty states that they will try to repair it first, and if they can't, they'll send you a new one. did you ask them to send you a new one first so that you wouldn't have to be without a notebook, or did they offer ta do it this way?

I do believe he is within the first 30 days of ownership, and Dell will bend over backwards to keep you happy.

This is probably the case. I also told them that I work on the laptop alot, and can't be without it.

which is completely false, cause all I do is surf the net, play games, and watch/burn DVD's!

I sent Dell an email about my faulty CDRW/DVD on Monday, and I have the replacement todady (Tuesday) !!!!!! The computer is less than a month old and I told them the same thing about me using it a lot and it being a big inconvenience. I only use the CDRW somtimes though, and the DVD/CD reading was fine!
