What I'd like to know is if this is really normal for the 5620/5660 UXGA screens or if there was something wrong with the screen. I ended up sending it back, it really looked to me like there was something wrong with the screen, and I was afraid that it would only get worse over time.

No, that's not normal from my experiences. Here's a much more extreme angle shot of the 5660 and 8886 I took:

You can see it's not perfectly even because of the lighting and because at that point, you're reaching the limit of it's viewable range. Yours looks really bad though. Let us know how the exchange goes.

Thanks for the reply PCTorque. I couldn't imagine that the ripples on the bottom of the screen were normal. I originally exchanged my 5620 for another one and it had the same problem (the picture is from the 2nd one, the first one was worse), so I sent the 2nd one back and got a refund. I had to pay two shipping charges though so I wasn't happy. I actually wasn't happy about a few things with the dealer I used (I wont mention any names). I've waited a little while but need to purchase a new lappie soon. If that really isn't normal then I'll probably go with another Sager. I wonder if maybe there was a bad batch of UXGA screens. Now I just have to decide between the 5660 and the 8886. I'd love the bigger screen, but I liked the size of the 5620, it was just right for me to carry around. The 8886 might be a little bigger then I'd like. Whichever I decide I'll be purchasing from pctorque.com. You're prices are excellent and this forum is a great service for all of us.

Thanks,
Mike

I wanna bump this to the top and see if anyone else has seen this happen on a Sager laptop screen. Here's the URL to the picture again:

Thanks,

nope, mine is clear as can be. (5660) just got it last week.

nope, mine is clear (8886) . i would definitely have sent that back too.

also with regard to monitor tilt (backward/forward) yes when you're looking slightly down on it you do have to tilt it back past 90 degrees. i have found, however, that it is kind of a convenient analog contrast/brightness adjuster to move it

This 8886 screen is perfect... I can sit in front of it for hours at a time with no problem, and the brightness and contrast are amazing :-)

checking... nope...

No problems with the screen on my 5660...

Just got it two hours ago... yeay!

Just trying to install XP to it now.... THe disc is sooo old and scratched, hope it works.

Here's something interesting.. I was in Best Buy last night looking at laptops and they had the Sony Vaio with the 16.1" UXGA screen. The screen on that one had the same problem that my 5620 did, ripples across the bottom of the screen, except that instead of a few big ripples like mine had, it had at least 12 to 15 smaller ripples going across the bottom, all the same size and distance from each other, very uniform. It definitely wasn't the type of thing that could occur from customers touching the demo unit's screen. I was suprised to see it and now it has me wondering if this is something related to large size UXGA screen. I'm glad to hear the responses from 5660 and 8886 owners that haven't had this problem.
I am wondering what would cause that myself... from looking at your picture I would say that something was pushing along the screen from behind it, lol, as if it was dented or something, but I dunno how that could have happened other than by hitting the thing... which may explain why a sony at Best Buy might have the problem, lol. It's ALMOST funny what customers do to those computers... that's why I never by display units. They've been on 12/7 for who knows how many weeks, lol, and customers touch them.... eeek...

The problem may be caused by people ... PUSHING on the screen. I have a friend who loves doing this, that dork. I don't know, I think that could contribute to that problem.

What it looks like is someone didn't put the stuff on tight enough; maybe came loose. I don't know what I mean by stuff 'cuz I'm not hardware.

Prolly the liquid crystal screen part, lol... if you push on it it actually looks really cool :-) but that doesn't mean I sit there and do it, lol, I just do it when a pixel is stuck. Usually helps.
Pushing on the screen causes no damage at all? It DOES look cool but I'd be afraid to do it to a spanking new Sager.
lol, it most definitely does cause damage! Not to mention the possibility of scratching the screen, and then of course the nice oily spots that end up on it. :-) I didn't say it doesn't damage the screen... Lol, quite the opposite :-)
But will it cause it to have little ripples like that? And what did you mean by "when a pixel is stuck."
A pixel on an LCD screen can become stuck on a certain color or it can die completely and be black... pushing on them sometimes helps to unstick them...

As far as causing ripples, I have no idea... I've never seen them in person, much less caused them :-)
black eh? How about teal? I've seen laptops with multiple teal dots all over the place. Those may actually have been caused by pushing on the screen, but who knows.
Yeah, teal blue is one of the colors they can stick at. Sticking is generally you and your luck... pushing on the screen with force may cause it, but more often it's just a random (or seemingly random) occurrance.
Okay, I'll give it a shot on those laptops or something. Ripples must be... one in a million because I've never seen it. It's probably just a manufacturing fault.
Definitely a possibility... it almost looks as if the screen isn't taut enough... like it's sagging or something.
I think I'll get grammar happy and say "I think you meant 'taut'"

Anyhoo, if it IS a manufacturing fault, don't you think Sager would have caught it?
