New M6810 cd drive doesnt read all the time

I jsut bought my M6810 yesterday and it is having a problem with its DVD/CDRW drive. When I first booted it, it read CD's fine. I then restarted the computer and it would not read CD's. If i tried to look at my D: drive it would just show me an empty CD with no files/directories. I then went through eMachines tech support and eventually they asked me to do a a non destructive restore with the restore CD. The CD could be read during the boot process. This worked, sort of. It once again read teh CD's fine the first time, but when restarted it would have the same problem of not reading them.

They have issued me an RMA and want me to send the computer back, but I would rather see if I can fix this without missing my computer for a week or so. It seems to be a software issue, but what exactly? I am stumped. I have tried various CD's, even the ones I could originally read.

Take it back to Bestbuy. Folks have had lotts of luck with BB exchanging laptops.

Unfortunatley the BB I bought it from is 400 miles away. Will the local BB exhange it for me?

I would call your local BB and find out.

They should. I have returned stuff to a BB just one county over before. the two stores are probably not 30 miles apart, but I just happened to be in the area at the time.

I've returned/exchanged stuff across several states from Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA and pretty much any major corporately owned chain that is out there. As long as you have the receipt and everything that came in the box including the UPCs you should not have any problems.
Now here's the complicated part, the thing you have to watch out for is how they charge you for the sales tax. On a return you should be credited the sales tax from the original purchase locale, the same goes for an EVEN (i.e. 1:1) exchange, you should be charged the sales tax from the original purchase locale, therefore not pay any extra for the product, but on an upgrade you should be credited the original purchase amount but taxed for the local area. I've seen state taxes range anywhere from 5%-9%, this can lead to a significant difference for such a high priced product. Of course if you are tax exempt then this was all for naught.

i bought my m6810 last week and had to take it back for an exchange at BB the very next day! after i install XP pro SP2 my video started to freak out. all letters looked like a puzzle falling apart! the BB tech took a look at it and thought my video card/chip failed. So now i am on M6810 #2, and so far no problems,. i left XP home on it. B4 i sent it back to bb i called emachines and they wanted me to ship it back to them, and wait 10-14 days. I told them there is no way i spent this much money to use it for 12 hours and then not have it for 2 weeks.. " i was pissed when i called them" she said to me i dont blame you. BESTBUY was very friendly and understood my problem.. I must admit though i am nervous about reading of all these cracked hinges. so since i read about this issue, i now open my laptop slowly and with what i feel is less resistance..
