My Horror Story

Alright so here's my story. I decided i wanted a new mouse, and a nice one at that, So naturally i bought a Logitech MX500. Now don't get me wrong this is an amazing mouse, but i had some problems getting the scroll button (where you push down on the scroll wheel) to work in games. So i figured i'd install the older drivers off of the cd that came with it manually (through the update driver wizard, manually specifing the driver). Now i recentlly got my A+ certification so while i'm not god (YET) i defiently do know my way around a computer.

Here's where s**t hits the fan, after the new driver's installed the computer just shuts down. No biggie, just a little error, so i restart. Again shuts right down, so i try to restart again and i get a dreaded error message "Error loading OS". being the good tech i am i had recentally bought a 30GB hard drive and backed up all my music and movies and stuff, but i had a huge essay i was working on that had yet to get backed up. I tried for about an hour to manually get the damn thing working again but to no avail. So i used the XP cd to do the "repair current installation". I then had to call microsoft and go throught all their s**t to reactivate windows (which was alot easier then i thought it would be to tell the truth) and finally it was all up and running, or so i thought. Now every time i would click the mouse i'd get a funky blue screen (not the usuall one you would see) and be forced to shut down. So i jumped into safe mode, changed drivers, and still no luck, different mice didn't work either. So i went throught the whole repairing process one more time out of pure desperation, called microsoft, and now i'm typing this with no problems what so ever!!! Only problem, i'm afraid to update the driver since it's running of a driver for a different mouse right now (all but one button's working flawlessly though).

Anyway any insight would be helpfull but i wanted all of you to know my horror story. Oh yea and the entire process took about...8 hours, although most of the time i was with my family for fathers day or punching walls and yelling horribly horribly foul words.

is returning the mouse an option? thats what id do. or id eat it. ive heard mice can be quite tasty if they are slow roasted over an open grill. go for a nice red wine.

hey i have zero advise for you, but a question: what was the most difficult part of the A+ cert? is it really only 20 or so questions? do i really need to know all the irq's and i/o addy's by heart?
yeah that brings up a good question

why is installing drivers so dangerous? I tried to install a driver for an external hard drive that I had, and when I restarted the computer lost ALL DRIVERS. I'm still trying to fix the display.

you can actually check out MY horror story under "I facked up my dad's computer"

I've messed up computers ONLY by installing drivers. It must be the procedure order that matters so much and is so integral in keeping your precious safe.

It was decantly hard i'd say. It's between 20 and 30 questions but that's because it's "adaptive". In other words say you get a question wrong on printers, the test engine will asssume you don't know alot about printers and it'll ask you another, harder question about printers (sux i know). DEFIENTLY know all the IRQ's (0-15) and the basic i/o addresses (COM & LPT ports, primany hard drive etc). I recomend A+ All in one exam guide by Mike Myers. It's really easy to read and pretty in depth.

Feel free to ask if you have any other question.

I don't really get it especially since the driver i installed were on the cd that came with the mouse!!!

oh well it's working now but i just hope some time soon i can get the courage to install the driver that should be installed. Anyone have any advice on what driver will work with all the buttons for internet browsing but ALSO work the scroll button (again the one where u push on the scroll wheel) and other buttons to work in games?

i remember i used to have computer trouble, and would sometimes, but not often thank jeebus, spend the whole weekend repairing the comp.

well with all the trouble i went through, i'm glad to say i've never received any "tech support" before.

Well i did manually select the drivers off of the cd but i figured since they were off the CD they should have been alright, guess i was wrong...

Anyone ever had a problem like this with a mouse driver?

I had the same problem with the MX500 when it came to games. The scroll wheel push down button just didn't want to work. Here is what I figured out...

Make sure you have the original drivers that came with the mouse installed. Its called "mouseware".

Then, before playing a game, click the start menu and go to "run".

Copy and paste this:
"C:\Program Files\Logitech\MouseWare\System\EM_EXEC.EXE" /q

and hit enter.

This will temporarly turn off mouseware, and your scroll wheel buttom will work fine in games. To turn mouseware back on, just go to the control panel in windows, and click "mouse". It will turn right back on. Restarting your computer also turns mouseware back on. Good Luck!

Logitech also released this to help assist getting the mouse to work in games:

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm?co...alldocuments=1

It also provides a link to a utility thats suppose to help getting the mouse to work with games, but I haven't had much luck with it.

I read somewhere (I forget where) for all of the MX series, to ensure getting the latest version, download the drivers off of the Logitech website. I did this for my MX700, and it works perfectly, in normal apps and in games.

Alright i just installed the drivers off the website and now they work flawlessly in both apps and games, even got the scrolling speed just the way i like it. It's weird though because i did this right when i first got it and it still wouldn't work right in games...i have a feeling someday all these computer problems are going to make me grab an uzi and climb a clock tower.

I take that back. When I play Half-Life (or Oposing Forces, or Blue Shift for that matter) i can get my extra buttons to work with it's under software video, which we all know is pretty crappy quality, but will not work under direct 3d and the mouseware advanced setup utility thingy doesn't do much good. i swear someday logitech will pay for this!

SOMEONE HELP!!!

It would have to be a short tower with people sitting arould the base or all you'd be able to do is scare people, "hey someones throwin fire crackers off the tower!" Now a G3 well lets just say I hope that towers not in an open area.
