should i get the m6805 0r m6811

i have to say that i can get the m6805 for 1150 stright out and i would have to pay 1700 for the 6811, but then mail in the rebates. i know all of the differences in hard drive speed and Drive.

i just want to know how much faster is the 3400+ and the 3000+ which comes with the m6805?

i would be playing games but only like simcity 4 and the new Sims 2. i would also be doing some video editing, but thats downt the road a little bit.

i really dont care about the hard drive and the vd burner because i could always buy that stuff later with the money i save if i buy the m6805.

so basically would i find that theses a massive difference between the 3400+ and 3000+ or will i not notice?

i dont want a laptop and then regret it when i use a 3400+ and find its noticibly faster. if the 3400+ is much fast ima buy the m6811 if not i wanna save the money!!

i also saw ont he bestbuy website taht you cannot update the ram on the m6805, is that true???
please hellp!!!

Maybe this will help you decide. I would go for the M6811 myself.

Ram is upgradeable on both. You just can't access one slot without voiding the warranty. So you end up replacing a 256mb and you have that 256 mb SoDimm that you can't use. They should have put a 512 in the slot under the keyboard.

The m6811 are basically identical except BIOS version, optical drive, HD size, and processor speed. In short, yes you can upgrade the RAM on the m6805.

They both should have 1MB cache. All Mobile A64 processors have 1MB cache, even the DTR. The non-mobile ones have only 512K, but run 200MHz faster. You would need to change the "stock" BIOS on the m6805 if it the 0f02.p00 to upgrade to SP2 of Windows XP.

The only way you would "see" a performance difference is:

a. Benchmarks
b. If you do heavy, long encoding cycles that use 100% CPU for very long periods of time. You might see a minute or two per hour difference in encoding times (if that).

The main reason for the big price difference is the fact that the m6805 is no longer in production, thereby causing clearance prices. When they were still being produced, they were $1499 before applicable rebates. The m6805 was replaced by the m6810 (basically the same model, add the 3200+ in place of the 3000+).

One advantage you would have buying an m6811 is knowing if it is in the "cracked hinge cover" batch or not by first checking the serial number.

The 6805 and 6811 both have 1MB of L2 cache. Unless the machine you are looking at was hacked!

Here's the link to eMachine's 6805 product page.

Here's the link to eMachine's 6811 product page.

They both show 1MB of L2 cache. If you go to the Mobile AMD Athlon 64 Processor Model Numbers and Feature Comparison page, you can see a good comparison between the 3000+ and 3400+ chips showing that the differences are:
  1. 400 Mhz speed
  2. Intermediate steps for processor throttling with powerNow
  3. Wattage consumption at the intermediate steps

Where did you get that info? If it is a 512K L2, then someone swapped a non-mobile A64 into it. This, of course, would result in horrid battery life. The DTR was bad enough on batteries, and the desktop A64 (the 512K cache CPU) consumes even more power than the DTR.

FWIW, I have a 6805 and I play FAR CRY on it with no issues at all. I would consider this laptop to be overkill for Sim CIty 4 and sims 2. If your not familiar with that FC, it has brought alot of my friends systems to their knees.
