Linux and computers

Thread Starter
Is it possible to run a laptop in Linux that has the same user freindliness/interface as Windows? What does Linux "look" like on your desktop? ANyone have photos?

When i get my new computer i am thinking of reformatting my hard drive on my old one and installing Linux just for fun. I currently use open source software for my browser (firefox) and LOVE it. It blows IE out of the water.

Maybe the OS is just as great?

There are literally dozens, maybe hundreds, of GUI's for Linux. The most popular "Windows lookalikes" are Gnome and KDE (definitely KDE.org, search for the other). If you'd like to give it a try before committing completely, look into a distro called Knoppix, it's capable of a CD based boot (pop in the cd, loads everything into memory and you have a fully-functional Linux system without formatting HDD).

i would also look at SUSE since you can download a Live cd and an Install ISO. But get the 32bit version if you have a broadcom wireless since you have to use ndis wrappers to get it to play nice with linux. BTW i have Suse 9.1 installed on my Compaq R3000Z and it works great, even the touchpad.

I would also look into mandrake and fedora core (redhat) as some other distros.

All of the aforementioned distros are avilable at www.linuxiso.org.
