12.1" Sentia Review 09.14.2004

My new baby has been in my grubby hands for 24 hours now.

Wow, what a beauty. Sleek, smoothly-running, light- everything one could want in a portable.

I've read all of the other reviews here, so I'm not going into a whole lot of detail, because they are all pretty accurate.

My single disappointment was that the Linux/Power DVD Cinema wasn't installed- but, hey, that's OK I can handle that. The placement of the various USB ports and connectors is very efficient. I would disagree with previous reviewers abouting knocking the DVD drive open; that hasn't happened to me yet. Also, while it does *seem* to run a bit warm, I can say that it runs less warmly than my DTR HP system.

As far as gaming, I am pleasantly surprised; I've been running "Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind" and it is very smooth and fast. I will try installing "Halo" tonight.

The screen; what can I say? I believe it makes the system. Nicely reflective, clear as all get out- I can read stuff from six feet away...

DVDs look good on it, because of the 4:3 ratio. Wireless seems pretty solid; now configured with the a/b/g card.

No complaints here.....

Specs:
2 Ghz CPU/755
2 GB RAM
80 GB 5400 HDD

Mine is in Phase 12 right now. How long did it take for yours to ship once it was in Phase 12? And how long did it take to ship to your doorstep exactly?

Hmmm. Mine hit Phase 12 on Wednesday of last week-the 8th- and was delivered to my door on the 13th. My FedEx notification came late on the night of the 9th.

Now, that was just from Florida to Philadelphia, FedEx Saver.

Cool. Sounds like if mine ships out tomorrow I might possibly have it Saturday maybe. Do you know if they deliver on Saturdays?

I'm actually going to be a little sad when you finally get your Sentia, i3041. I will miss seeing your posts in every thread like "How long from phase X to Phase Y?", "How long did it take to ship once it got to phase Z?", "Please post pics of your Laptop soon!", "I need to see pics!", etc. . . .

Just kidding. Mine is in Phase 4 and I am anxious as well.

Just so you know the cut down chips (celeron, centrino) run ALOT hotter than full chips p4.
thats interesting.... because the low-energy chipsets literally run less electricty through the system, hence higher battery. But this also means that there is less potential energy (heat, in this case)... so its really interesting that lower-energy chips are hotter.... must be worse ventilation or somthing....
I know, I think what it is is they havte to do alot more work to get the job done. not with celeron bt centrino there is some weird algroythm which says 1.7centrino is like a 2.8 P4 so its running lower electricty through it but at fast rate.

I also think ventalation is an issue. P4 laptops r genarally bigger and can have more surface area for radioting the heat out. My celeron runs extremly hot (for 1.2)

just to clear somthing up though, centrino isn't 'cut down' its a whole new design. Anyways, i think you may be on to something about it just running higer wattage through a lower voltage system.... Maybe its variable, like when its running on batteries it lowers to wattage to just barely what the application at the time needs to run. It might run cooler on batteries..... I guess i'll just have to wait till my Sentia comes in to test my theory out.

Ok, sorry i knew celeron was a cut down. i figured maybe centrino was aswell. thanks for clearing it up.

I have noticed my dell runs ALOT hotter when on power.
