external batteries : are they possible with a XPS ?

Ive been looking at external high capacity batteries that like those ...

They are said to give 10h of runtime for even a P4...

I would be more then interested to get one for my upcoming iXPS, but I red this on a battery model on ebay :

"Please note: Dell Inspiron 5100, 5150, 8500, 8600,9100 are not supported by any of our battery products due to the recognition chip built inside those laptops."

Sooooo ..... what the hell is up with that ?!

Even if you could get one of these for your XPS (You can't and I'd imagine Battery Geek would be the one to ask) you wouldn't get ten hours out of it.

It puts out 111-118 WH, if the standard battery is 96 WH and gets you 1:45, and a 132 WH battery gets you about 2:30, this one would be somewhere in between.

It would be cool to some extent because you'd get almost four hours (off the top of my head) of continuous power, but you'd also be lugging more stuff along with your 9.5LB laptop.

If battery life was that important to you maybe you should have bought something else....

I think battery life is nice for everyone to have... I did not pretend I wanted to live entierly off the battery...

I can, and what I need to know is, does it work. Whats the deal with the chip... I have asked battery geek 3 times but Im guessing hes a busy man and did not reply to me yet. The XPS Isnt in the compatibility list...

The person I should ask is someone who already has an external battery.

So my question still stands, does it work ?

If you've asked him three times and he hasn't bothered to reply then I'm not sure why you'd buy from him.

From what I understand(which isn't always a good thing to go by) the 9100 has a sort of voltage monitoring chip that will throttle down the cpu and may even prevent the notebook from powering on if it isn't able to pull the proper amount of wattage. But I could very well be wrong.

@Briandl
didnt say I would

that website has batteries I could show as examples of what I mean by external batteries. He doesnt seem very reliable, like you've pointed out

@Myhre
My guess is the XPS has that chip in as well.

But from the sound of it, it sounds like a pretty simple chip to go around...
Oh well ... I will keep an eye out on infos on this thread and concerning this issue
