got the corsair ram and have been using for a while. Seems great so far.

CoffeeShark: do you have problems hibernating with sp2? I *think* sp2 might be screwing it up a bit. Also can you read these 2 posts in case you know something I don't

vectrex,

My machine hibernates perfectly with sp2. But I did do a fresh install of XP, then went right to sp2 before installing any programs.

i'll check on the mousepad, the only thing i've changed so far is turning on the option to disable the touchpad while typing, and enlarge the scrolling area (vertical).
I have noticed the scrolling isn't always perfect, sometimes you have to try a few times to get the right action.

As for the Svideo issue, i've never tried outputting to composite, so you're ahead of me there. I'll check on it when I have a chance.

I installed an new version of XP Pro which came with SP2 on my 510c..

No problems with hibernation.
hmm well the svideo thing was because the 2 cables I had were for gfx cards that can output composite through 2 lines. I got an adapter and it works.

Coffeeshark, I noticed that you swapped out the cpu in your 510c for the 1.7 dothan.....Do you really notice any difference in speed or productivity??

it's really not very noticeable, I used the old processor in my other laptop (i don't use it as much). I'm sure there's a measurable difference, but it's nothing I've noticed when working. Maybe a touch faster when I'm using larger files.

There was a known issue in SP2 with regards to hibernation. They stated that it was only related to laptops with 1GB or RAM or more, but I know of at least one person who experience a problem with this with only 512MBs RAM. A fresh install corrected the problem in his case. I do believe there is a hotfix for the 1GB and hibernation issue.

As for barebones, h00ligan, just locate a reseller of the 510c and ask them if they will sell you just the barebones and not configured, if their site doesn't specifically offer barebones only.

is the barebones unit that bluish gray color? or is it the white pearl like on the msi australia site? i am seriously considering having rawpowerpc configure me one... but i want the white pearl if possible

US gets the silvery finish, while euro and aussies have the pearl white available.

i think i am going to take the plunge and order the msi... but before i do... any complaints (major/minor) about the 510c coffeeshark? the screen is ok? despite it being xga you said it was the best xga you've come across. graphics card being only 64mb 9600 doesn't bother me too much since i only do occasional gaming (and not the heavy duty graphics taxing games)

thanks

Yes, the XGA screen is excellent, and the video card handles most everything other than maybe doom3 and on. I think you'll really like the system, it's a good build quality and a unique design.

If I had my way, the US would have the SXGA screen, and the plexi-panel on the back of the LCD would have the interchangeable graphics like they do in Asia (You can print off graphics and slide them in behind the plexi sheet).

Otherwise, it's a great machine.

I have now used my 510c for a couple of months and had great results. It is solid, quiet, cool and user friendly. The silence of the fan and the coolness of the unit is really exceptional.

The screen is really pretty good when running on AC at full brightness. On battery power it dims up quite a bit, but it is not really a problem.

The MSI online update system is very good too. For a notebook with only a very minor presence in the U.S. I find that the online update system is pretty impressive. It does a better job than the update systems on my other name branded PC's and notebooks.

I noticed that my daughter, who owns recent ( and costly) Apple notebook used my MSI 510C when visiting over Thanksgiving, and she really liked it.

I highly recommend this unit, unless you are a heavy gamer that needs more graphics performance.

Their online update is great, even does the bios - have you tried their utilities, too? Some of them are pretty good.

MSI has been doing the online updates on their desktop mobos for a long time, so it's nice that they continued it with the notebooks.

i went ahead and had rawpowerpc build me one of these bad boys. loving it so far . maybe i am just stupid... but how does this msi update sytem work?

You should've received some utilities on the drivers disk - install those, one of those is an auto-update feature called 'Live Update'. Once installed, it will check for updated drivers, utilities, etc for your hardware. (Bios, too)

What it doesn't do is tell you if you need updated drivers - it simply lists what is available, and you have to check your system for what you have. But it's very easy to use.
i guess i already installed it. i have "live update" which checks for windows updates on a regular basis... then it tells me that i have updates ready to install... i thought that was standard with windows xp computers... if it isn't... very nice feature.

it's not for windows updates - it's a separate app called LiveUpdate, connects to the MSI site to check for updates. It then provides you with a list of drivers and utilities to be updated.
im browsing the drivers/utilities cd that came with it... the only thing i see on it that sounds anything like the live update is "intel INF update"
