Just wondering 9100 8XDVD+rw DL problem

A friend of mine at work just got a new 9100 with the Sony DVD+rw 8X dual layer, but the first time he tried to burn with it, it took a dive. Dell was very nice, and is overnighting him a replacement drive. We were just wondering if anyone else has had problems with the sony DL drive, or if it was just an isolated incident. We'll let you know if the replacement is able to burn, or if it too dumps.

i've got the same burner on my lappy, but i havent burned with it yet. Was he burning on a DVD or CD? and was he using the sonic software? I hope i don't get this problem, leave us posted!

He was burning a DVD with another application (not Sonic), and It dumped on him. The replacement drive came in Thursday, sept. 16. He got a NEC 8x DVD+rw dual layer. It has worked really well so far. Burned with it within hours of getting it. Hope this is an Isolated flaw and not a Sony drive problem, for your sake. I'd try to burn a DVD soon, so you can get it swapped if there is a problem. Good luck!

Not sure about the Sony drive, but the NEC they replaced it with is VERY fast. Works great. Maybe they are having more than just isolated problems with the Sony drive.

Just got off the phone with Dell, requested the NEC drive to replace my Sony drive....I'm a bit worried that the tech support person from India understood that I needed the DL8x NEC drive and not just some random NEC drive to replace the Sony....

My Sony 8xDL started making this obnoxious and loud hum yesterday, while spinning Shrek 2.....
