Nvidia has always been stronger in Open GL support and that's what you need for Maya.

There's no question that you should go with the 9860. Please give us a review with your comments on Maya performance when you get your order.

If the German hints are close to true, it's also possibly 25-30%+ faster than the Mobility Radeon 9800. I'm not sure if that's overlocked or not, though.
I was thinking something along those lines..but figured it best to wait til Luke or Adam gives the review.. my guess is 12 pipelines..but if its 16 i'll truly be in heaven :P

Odd since Eurocom is offering about 4 choices including a slot style DVD Drive

Anyone think it's worth the extra $145 to get the 3.6ghz vs the 3.4ghz processor?

No.

I'd say no..its only a 200 mhz difference..not that much at these speeds... however I did hear the 3.6 ran cooler.. might have to do a search on it to research the processor more..

I found this article it has some benchmarking and such. Are the p4 3.4 and 3.6 cpus in the article the same as the ones coming in the 9860?

So who is the first person who's going to order this monster?

Anyone know how easy it will be to remove and replace hard drives on the 9860? I can't really tell from the pictures. I need a DTR notebook that allows easy swaping of hard drive. (IBM's are great for this... unfortunately they aren't great at much else)

I'll need to swap hard drives on a daily basis with this.

I believe that is the same processor..I know its a prescott.. they didn't make 3.6 northwoods

Fatmotti, I've no idea about how easy that would be, but how about using external HDs instead? If you're swapping them everyday, it would sure save a lot of hassle!
unfortunately we need to boot from these swaped drives.... It seems some notebooks with modular second drive bays will let you boot from them, but not all. I would love to buy a couple of these 9860's but the HD issue is a killer for me...

Ok...minor gripe...why do we have to have two seperate configurators when as far as I can tell everything is the same except the processor options. why not just have one configurator with all 4 processor choices in it.

I would look at the 5690. I have never had a 56XX series so someone else will have comment on the drive swapping ease.

A lot of motherboards will allow you to boot of a USB device - an external USB drive would meet your needs better.

So the question is does the 9860 allow booting off of USB?
USB would be way to slow to boot from and run an OS off of.... or so I've been told.

I've done this is the past but with floppies, not USB devices. Usually the trick is to just load the barest essentials off the removable media and then the remainder of the OS off the hard drive. This is very useful when you have an OS like Windows which doesn't want to get along with other OSes, but I don't think this has been a problem for awhile now.

I have heard rumors of folks doing complete Linux software systems on these USB dongle devices, so maybe it's a reality.

Here's a general rule: If it's possible to do technically, then provide the functionality to the users: They will always find something useful to do with it.

In an earlier post Luke said Bluetooth would not be available until sometime in Dec.

is it an add on thing or is it something I have to wait until december to get?
