Sager 9860 announced - Page 47

Spoke at length with PC Torque and got my order fixed. Btw if you're interested in Raid 0 config: dual 5400 SATA will outperform dual 7200 ATA drives . It's nice to talk with someone knowledgeable and friendly at the same time, thanks PC Torque! And thanks to all you guys in these forums for all your help and answers!

These guys do know their business, but I do not believe this one item. The limiting factor for hard drives is the data rate coming off the platter. This data rate is can be matched by ATA66. Without seeing actual side-by-side banchmark results (same computer, different drive configuration), I would bet on the higher rpm drive outperforming the lower rpm drive.

I don't think it would be in their best interest to spread incorrect info (especially under the scrutiny of all the forum members). I expect we will see benchmarks of various HD configurations on Monday when they release the review. So the question will be answered in a few days.

I can't find it on Sager's website...

When SATA came to the desktop market it was supposed to be a huge increase in performance. It wasnt... About the only difference bewteen a SATA and ATA drive of the same speed is that the SATA lets you use the nice little red connection instead of a big fat ribbon wire.

I would expect an ATA 7200rpm drive to soundly beat out a 5400rmp SATA drive.

Now, if at was a 10k SATA.... /drool

I just know what I was told by the people building my 9860 (the moderators of this forum). That in a single drive situation the 7200 ATA outperforms the 5400 SATA, but in dual HD Raid 0 configuration the dual 5400 SATA outperforms the dual 7200 ATA. . . guess we'll see the "official" review soon enough, but I'm comfortable with their recommendation.

This may be true since both PATA drives go through one Channel wheras the SATA can possibly operate simultaneous requests. Just a guess on my part

I noticed that the price changed 200 dollars for the same config since yesterday. I've been trying to get ahold of someone there about adjusting my bill or changing the configuration but haven't beena ble to get ahold of anyone. You guys know if they work Saturdays?

Well, I guess I walked right into that one. However, I was thinking more along the lines of how it would look other than size. For instance, response, contrast, etc.

Thanks,
Robert

I just looked at my order and the config now shows it to be $119 cheaper today than it came out to friday. If you look at their pricing policy it states you need to send them an e-mail to get the new price. I did that today and will wait for a reply from them monday.
I may ask them about which drive setup is faster on monday. Or i guess I could just wait and see if it in the review.

The TV tuner was standard when I ordered on Friday, and now it is $52.

So exciting, my god, what a gorgeous notebook! This thing is MINE MINE MINE! Sometime before Christmas hopefully.

I've been a lurker here since spring or so, and I've read every page in this thread. I've just been waiting for the next giant tech leap before buying my notebook, want this thing to last me a few years gaming. PCIe is where it's at, but I'd really like to be able to upgrade to the new OS in 2006 or whenever it's out, and I need to know if that'll be possible. Need a 64-bit CPU for the new Windows?! Will the 9860's mobo be ready for such an upgrade later on?! Someone please say yes.

Ah, I'm sorry about that. It sounded like you thought they were the same exact screens, just in different notebooks. I didn't mean to be a smart-ass or anything.

Anyone know what the response time is on the WSXGA/WUXGA screens that Sager uses in their laptops? I'm hoping under 25ms

I asked Luke about the 9860's compatibility with the 64 bit chips and he said that in theory the current Mobo is supposed to be compatible, however, until they actually get an Intel 64 bit chip in their hands and plop it on there to make sure it works they really won't know for sure. . . hope that helps

I was wondering the same thing, has to be lower than 25ms I would think, since many people are gaming on them and I don't hear many complaints. These are the same screens used by Hypersonic, Voodoo, etc.. right?! They gotta be fast. 12ms would be sweet, but I'm guessing they are 16ms. Don't know thou, anyone know for sure?!

What would be the point of equiping the notebook with such a killer video card only to have an LCD on it that can't keep up?!

The wide screen would be nice too, but I don't know if my eyes could handle that high res for long. Gonna take the WSXGA and be happy with it.
