USB problems

My 2 usb ports that are near the power supply cable have been acting up. What happens is they wiil work fine then loose connection then work again. The other 2 seem to work fine all the time. I wonder if this is a hardware issue or something else. I have sp1 installed. Any ideas?

I have tried switching things from one side to the other and it is consistent. A device...say a usb mouse will work fine on one pair but will have problems on the other

sounds like it's a bad connection between the ports and the motherboard

I had that same problem on my 8890, I had to send it back to Sager and get the motherboard replaced. Now all 4 work the way they should, although I think they changed my lcd too cause before it was great and now I get blue lines all across the screen.

Aww naww... Since I disassembled and reassembled my 8890 to change shells (see this thread), those same two USB ports haven't been working. When I first realised things weren't working right, Windows popped up messages saying there were errors recognizing the hardware (a mouse in this case), but now nothing happens at all.

Anyone encountered this and fixed it without Sager's intervention? Shipping back for repairs is out of the question, but living with only two USB ports isn't an attractive idea either.

/cry for help

ugh

Yeah, I'm seeing USB troubles too. I've got an external drive and sometimes it i'll hear the disconnect/reconnect sound in quick succession a few times an hour. Just before i sent this message it happened like 5 times in a row. I'm considering getting a PC card usb adapter to be on the safe side - i'm well out of warranty...

The same for me, but i don't want to send it to sager and wait 3 weeks without it.
So i do without ...

That's interesting. I'm not sure if this is a related problem but I'll mention it anyway (I will do a search to possibly find a solution, and if I don't then you may see this posted again on it's own thread...)

My USB ports work perfectly for any USB device except for storage devices. In other words, I can hook up my 2 game pads, a keyboard and a mouse, several MIDI devices, and even a 4-port USB1.1 hub without any problems, but I can't get Windows to recognize my USB2 DVD burner, my iPod nor my USB2 pen drive.
Any thoughts?

I use an 8887 with Win2K Pro

PS, Upgrading the OS is not an option ATM unless there is no other choice

I've had the disconnect/reconnect problem. It was really bad wth the old external enclosure. It would dissconnect and reconnect constantly. I threw it out because I thought it was a bad unit. It had the firewire too but that never worked right in my machine(8890 by the way purchased 8/03).
I've never tried any other firewire devices to see if it really is the machine though. Firewire I can live without.

The only other devices I've had disconnect and reconnect are my 1gb thumb drive and a few times my wireless mouse. It didn't seem to matter what port the old external enclosure was in.

So that was a long time ago. I just got a new enclosure today. Shoved the drive in and plugged it in. Fired up no problem. A few minutes later I see a search progress window. Oh-no!!! It disconnected and reconnected.

I'll have to watch it and transfer a bunch of things over the next few days.

Why have I never gotten the little usb connection notification in the lower right hand notification area?

Just like to throw out that I am very satisfied with my 8890 overall. It's been to georgia in the hottest, most humid conditions for 3 months, germany in the winter and kosovo for 7 months. Tons of moving and shaking. The usb thing is the only annoyance. It runs like a dream otherwise. Goes with me to lan fests and pretty much runs 24/7. It runs acad 2006 well too.
