Microsoft is allowing customers to download and use Windows XP Pro 64 Bit Edition for one year. I'm going to try it out on Friday, when I build my Athlon 64 system. I'll let everyone know how it runs with current applications and drivers. If your brave, or you have a second HD or partition, you can download it HERE

Me either, I've already got it burned and ready to go. I'll start a thread about it Friday night, after the Fedex guy drops off my new parts.

Downloading Now....
post #5 of 17
ok, well i had to say, i am at school now downloading it to my sager,, it is at 1.2 MB/s!!!!!! I never knew the servers were that fast.

Oh well, i am instaling onto a new comp that currently gets bluescreen everytime its booted. Hope the cause was sp2, i'll try this windows.

Could the cause be a damaged hard driv, I have 2*160gb sata hard drives in raid0,,,would a disk problem, not reported by scandisk, cause this???

i would try it with my 64 bit amd but i dont wanna risk messing up everything.... windows runs fine right now and i dont wanna mess it up.

would it be worth it to try it on a 32 bit system? i'm just guessing it would, but are there any other changes other than that? thanks.

That sounds like a DEP problem with SP2. If you can go into safe mode, then do the following and see if it fixes it.

IMPORTANT: Save a copy of your original Boot.ini file as a backup before you make changes!

To disable DEP, perform the following actions:

Click Start -> Run
Enter Attrib C:\Boot.ini -r -h -s
Click Start -> Run
Enter Notepad C:\Boot.ini
Under [operating systems] replace the parameter /NoExecute=xxxxx with /Execute
Save the Boot.ini file
Click Start -> Run
Enter Attrib C:\Boot.ini +r +h +s
Restart your computer

A word of warning...

Make sure all of your key components have 64-bit drivers. I've installed XP 64-bit on my AX7, but Gigayte refuses to make compatable drivers for their wifi card until XP64 goes gold. Other than that, everything else seemed to go well. Unfortunately, it's pretty useless without a working network card. Consequently, I don't really boot up that partition very often...

The disc won't even boot if you don't have a 64bit system.

I tried an older version on my M6805. I only used it for about a day because I couldn't get a wireless driver. The observations I made was that it booted MUCH faster and that it mentioned AMD a few times during setup...

hey,
thanks for the info but i just did w/o sp2 this round. My cmp was wiped out b/c of a bad attempt to recover with ghost, so I reinstalled windows and just refused the sp2 download. It works well, so now there is no doubt that it was sp2....
Windows 64 was a no go for me... I have raid installed and therefore had to download the 64 bit drivers. However, after a whole hassle with that and finally getting them to a floppy disk, windows booted, i selected f6 for the 3rd party drivers, selected the drivers from the disk, but then after all that, windows still said I had no hard drives installed...so I gave up on the 64 bit edition,,,,i didnt wanna go thru all the hassles of downloading every 64 bit driver.
but anyway, thanks for the help venom.

I've had some problems with RAID drivers on my new setup, so I'm definitely not going to try Windows XP 64.

I will install it today maybe just for fun... so far everything I have is compatible or has drivers...

And since Tuesday I will format my entire system anyways, no real harm in trying!
