First let me say that i have bought a legit version of XP Pro and do posses my own key

I was reinstalling xp pro on my desktop, again. When I get this message from Microsoft that said that I had 30 days to contact a service rep about my activition code beign used to many times. I had "exceeded my number of activitaions" I was wondering if other folks have encountered this problem after reinstalling there OS multiple times?

Yep
You can usually do it automated over the phone though.
Then after so many more time you will have to talk to someone.

Did you change any components in your system?
That's a real pain. I'm constantly upgrading my computer, and have to call frequently. Most of the time the automated system doesn't work, so you have to read off a crap load of numbers to some person, then they read a crap load back to you. Very annoying. I bought it, but can't use it without calling Microsoft.

it's funny how microsoft makes it easier NOT to buy their products.

Hmmm, so would you be breaking the law in using a keygen or just making things more convenient? maybe that will end up in the courts alongside P2P networks...

There is a way to legally back up your activation info, so you don't have to keep reactivating. BUT, I've never gotten it to work properly.

you can't use a keygen on a retail copy. must be a multiple user copy as i understand it. so he would have to download one of those from somewhere.

I have considered using an illegal copy just so that i dont have to jump through the hoops. If it ever becomes and issue i can produce my offical legit key. thought you guys might have an easier fix, this sucks!

If you setup your system, patch it, activate it and then norton ghost it

wouldn't that work to?

As for the key, yes you have to call in each and every single time you reinstall windows for an activation key where the system component is different from your previous setup.

It is a real pain in the #$#EWD#$@$EWD

Isn't there an option to "activate on the internet" ? I just used that on my work machine a while ago, and it worked fine, and I was done in 3 minutes...

... after having spent most of the day so far trying to change the cd key into one I was *supposed* to be using (purchased specifically for my machine), without re-installing (apparently not possible) and was quite pissed at Microsoft by that time

Just went through the phone activation process again. It took at least 10 minutes. I had to read a ton of numbers to the computer, which of course didn't work. Then I got transferred to some guy asking if he could call me to see if I was happy with the customer service. Then I had to read ALL of the numbers to some lady who barely spoke english, after which she read me a crap load of numbers back.

Internet activation doesn't work if you change more than a couple parts in your system. I almost never get it to work. I really need to figure out how to back up my activation. Man, Microsoft needs to quit worrying about money and try to keep their customers happy. How much money is too much money? Their extremely rich, and Bill gates is worth billions. I would have retired long ago. You can't take it with you when you die.

the program tweakXP has a part of the program that lets you backup your XP license and office license so you won't have to enter it again. Otherwise I just call them, I wonder if they can ever stop reseting it for me?? Since i have called at least 15 times since I have bought it.

If you use unattended setup, you might be able to copy the wpa.dbl file during the setup portion and then not have to go through the safe mode part.

That is what I do. Just copy that file back over and you are set to go. The only time it will change is when you change a component in you computer.
