Fixed DVD Burner: Toshiba SD-R6112 with Asus M6N

hi folks

for those of you who have an asus m6n and a toshiba sd-r6112 dvd burner..you may have noticed that your supposed 2x dvd burner can only burn at 1x regardless of the media or program or even an updated firmware

but thankfully from this website (http://lenni2004.narod.ru/). we are now supplied with a mod patch hack to allow 2x burning on our 2x dvd burner.

after flashing my drive..i can burn dvd-r at 2x yay! no more 1hr long burn waits

taken from the readme file:

H2H: Toshiba SD-R5112/6112 firmware hack utility
------------------------------------------------

Version 2.1
-----------

Now supports Toshiba SD-R6112 hex file.

for Toshiba SDR-6112 only
-------------------------
1) You need to download your firmware Zip file file from
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1603

2) Unzip this file you get *.hex file and some more files for DOS flashing

3) Use H2H.exe to patch your *.hex file

4) Reboot to DOS and run update.bat

After that you will get Region free (rpc1) and 2x burning for almost all
DVD-R medials in your Toshiba SD-R6112.

for Toshiba SDR-5112 only
-------------------------
Supports Windows SD-R5112-1033.exe firmware flashing (both RevA/revB).
You don't need rebooting to DOS

1) You need to download f/w 1033 Zip file (SD-R5112-1033.zip) from
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1633

2) Unzip this file you get SD-R5112-1033.exe

3) Use H2H.exe to patch SD-R5112-1033.exe

4) Run SD-R5112-1033.exe

After that you will get Region free (rpc1) and 4x burning for almost all
DVD-R medials in your Toshiba SD-R5112.

Please note that this method is good for both RevA and RevB type
of the drive. Please note that you will get X433 firmware number.
You can easy return to native 1033 if you will use H2H and
press buttons [More Options], [Load file], [Remove] twice, [Save file].

Advantages:

1) It supports Region free(rpc1) patch by hijacker and 4x burning speed
patch by me. Firmware version with two patches will be X433

2) It can patch Windows based SD-R5112-1033.exe file. It was really
hard to do. From now you do not need to boot DOS to update your drive with
Region free patch.

3) It can extract both RevA(kn*.*) and RevB(kp*.*) HEX file from 1033.exe

4) If you will use patched 1033.exe then you can update X031(X033)
firmware to 1033(X033,X433) firmware. Original 1033.exe was required first
the X031->1031 and next 1031->1033.

Thank you, hijacker!

Wonder if the SD-R6372 has this problem.....

ive read online that toshiba optical drives have trouble reading cheap media, so maybe that model has the same problem...but give it a go if it supports your drive

The R6372 certainly has a problem. Toshiba Tech Support told me that the SD-R6372 will only burn at 4X if you use supported 4X media. If you try to use 8X media it will burn at 2X -for "safety reasons", I was told. The drive will not burn any 8X media at 4X speed. I don't know of anywhere that still sells DVD-R 4X media, so I have a 4X speed burner that can only burn at 2X speed for "safety reasons". Great drive If anyone knows of a similar flash for the R6372, please, please let me know where to find it

I was able to use the H2H.exe patcher at http://lenni2004.narod.ru to patch a .hex file found at http://hijacker.rpc1.org/toshiba/ind...path=SD-R5112/ for the new version 1034 for a Toshiba SD-R5112 so it will now burn any unrecognized media at 4X and also be region free. I'm now able to use 8X Ritek G05 at 1X, 2X and 4X instead of only at 1X. It already included G04 but not G05 or their F01 16X disks. You can use either the 1034 or x034 (region free patch already included but NOT the 4X patch) version and load it into h2h to then fix the 1X speed problem. Just use the MORE OPTIONS button to get access to the extra buttons. Also, at http://hijacker.rpc1.org/toshiba/ind...ath=Utilities/ you will find 2 useful utilities, Hex2Bin will convert the .hex file to a .bin that Twinfwup.exe can use so you can easily patch the drive from within Windows. This will require you restart the computer after applying the update so shut down other non-essential applications first. With this patch in place you will now be able to burn any new media at 2X or 4X as newer and faster media, like the 16X Ritek media, keeps being released.

It took me most of a day to locate and learn about and then to properly apply all these but it will save me many hours of waiting for DVDs to finish. I'd suggest anyone with a Toshiba SD-R5112 do the same immediately.
