SP2 on an M2350 - Page 3

bigfix patch? sp2?

it's great they have released it but bigfix has not reported a new patch for the sp2 upgrade for the 2350 - as far as my bigfix is concerned. it may be because i finally stripped out the emachines system and installed a new version of retail windows xp pro. can anyone help me find a link to download the patch? i cannot find it on the emachines site nor windows or anywhere else for that matter.

thanks

lol this is a pretty old thread you dug up joeeeeee

looks like i never explained the problem in here. i have mentioned it in a couple other places, but let me put it in here to complete the thread

the problem was the original image installed by the restore CDs (an already installed copy of XP) had some registry entries left in related to the OOBE (the setup screens you get that walk you through setting up, registering, etc). SP2 uses the OOBE interface when it's installed to have you turn on Automatic Updates. since the registry entries were still in there for the last time the OOBE interface was used, they were conflicting with the new call of OOBE, hence the crash.

the BigFix removed the registry entries that were causing the problem, allowing SP2 to install just fine

Hey you found a way to fix it? I have a emachines m2350 laptop after updating the OS to SP2 it keeps resetting after showing the windows logo. I've been searching for a way to fix this problem except I don't have these restore discs and don't know how to get them is there a way I could download them or could anyone make me a copy? I just want my laptop the way it was before I tried to update it.

lol, again, pretty old thread to dig up

as I mentioned before, it was caused by some registry entries left in from the original setup, a bigfix was pushed early 2005 to remove those bad ones. unfortunately i know of no way to fix it once the damage is done, so youd have to use the restore discs.

you can always call up emachines and get some new discs, will cost $20 for the discs + shipping/handling (unless they changed the price since I left)

I also have a eMachines M2350 laptop. I had to install a new HDD and used the recovery CD that came with laptop. It installed Windows XP SP1. When I upgraded to windows XP SP2, the laptop keeps crashing and rebooting. Searching through the internet I discovery that it was a registry entry. The laptop came with a BigFix program that corrected the problem. But, Bigfix is no longer available for emachine or gateway, as of April 2009. I've performed a recovery again, which put me back to SP1. Are there any suggestions to how to resolve the problem

Have you tried to update it directly to SP3?

After doing a system restore, then I've tried upgrading directly to SP3, with the same results! BSOD!

Error/message code for the BSOD?

cheers ...

Sorry, BSOD is an acronym for Blue Screen of Death. Anyway, after installing directly to win SP3, the results are the same as with sp2. I.e. the laptop would continuously boot then crashes at the windows logo, then reboots etc. The blue screen flashes so fast, I don't get a chance to read the stop code.

Try to boot up and get into Windows under Safe Mode. Then turn off the automatic restart in Control Panel, Advanced, Startup.

It still crashes when I f8 to the safe mode. Anyway, I'm having this problem while upgraded from a 20gb to a 40gb HDD. The 20GB was patched with BigFix (no longer available) and has XP SP3.
From internet research, (http://www.databaseforum.info/10/13/...026913649.html) the BigFix patch deleted this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\SYSPREP_TEMPORARY I tried to deleted the key. But of course, windows won't let me. The instruction at the link stated that it can’t be done without an AccessControlCenter adjustment, which I don't know how to make.
But, I think it would be easier to try and clone the 20GB to the 40GB. But I'm not familiar with it enough to try. The only software relevant to cloning, that I have, is Partition magic 8. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I do thank you for your assistance

I recommend that you look into Acronis True Image. The trial version should let you clone the 20gigo onto the 40gigo drive easily.

Thank you, the Acronis True Image worked perfectly. Done!!
