8790 LCD Flicker Flicker GONE

Help. I had the lcd flickering, have an RMA for the cable inverter fix, was taking my time moving files off so I could be sure not to lose anything when it is getting repaired. I came home from the office where it was working fine, turned it on, and NOTHING from the LCD. I mean it is pitch black. All the pixels out. What gives? I tried FN ing the LCD/Monitor button with no results. Is this thing dead?

I noticed when I was messing around with it, there is a picture but only visible when i have a lamp shining on the screen. It is the windows login! What could make the picture fade out to the point of invisibility?

There is a little toggle switch under the right hinge that if you jiggle it, turns the lcd on and off. Per tech support I juggled it and the lcd is fine now. It is quite small, right to the right of the power button.

Wierd...

Also, when you are going to send a laptop in for repair... don't worry about backing up your hard drive. Just pull the hard drive out before you send it in. I never RMA a laptop with the hard drive in it. All the manufactures have test hard drives they can use.

Even though I ghost my laptop's HDD to my server, I usually send it in with the repair. I have never had a tech wipe the HDD or even modify anything on it. When the laptop is sent in, I make a special "tech" account without a password and set Tweak XP to log on to the tech account automatically.

HOWEVER, I am not stupid. I erase all sensitive files before I send the laptop in. This includes web applications I am working on either for myself or customers, the email PSTs, all MS Outlook email account passwords, and the like. You may think that's a lot of work to delete the stuff, but I've grown accustomed to locking computers down and can do this fairly quickly.

As a general rule, techs wipe HDDs when they feel it may be a software problem. Perhaps mine have never been wiped because I include a few pages documenting the problem, and if I send a laptop in, you can bet it is not a software problem (mainly because I make certain of it).

Anyway, I actually make use of that little switch to turn the backlight off. If I am going to sleep and want to leave the computer running (the latter is a rare event indeed), I will prop my headphone plug on the switch with a pen in such a way that the plug’s weight depresses the switch. I’ve seen how hot the 8790’s palm rest can get, so I leave the LCD up to help with heat dissipation.

I had the intermittant flicker problem on my 8790. I had to send it to Sager three times and they still could not fix it. I now have a new 8790. They replaced the switch each time and it still did not fix it. My new 8790 works fine.

I had to send my computer back to them three times for the same problem. I also had to push a little. It was frustrating because I was without my 8790 for some time while they tried to figure it out. Eventually they gave up on my old one and sent me a new one.

Well I got the machine back from Sager and the flicker is gone. I actually also upgraded to the newer LCD so I cant vouch for the cable inverter fix by itself. So far so good.
