Dell 700m: First Impressions

I bought and received my HP ZT3000 (aka Compaq x1000) a week ago. And promptly returned it for a Dell 700m (which arrived today!)

The HP ZT3000 was really quite a beautiful laptop -- nice screen, great keyboard, solid construction. But it was soo big! It just wasn't something you could pull out during a meeting or at class and have sitting in front of you (without being obnoxious). It was tough, because I hated to return something with such a gorgeous 15.4in widescreen, full-size keyboard, and relatively fast video card.

But I had to tell myself that I'll play games on my desktop, watch movies on my TV, so I really just needed something to bring to meetings and do wireless internet on.

My Dell 700m arrived a few hours ago. I'm very impressed with it so far! It's so tiny compared to the behemoth I received in the mail last week. I pulled it out and was almost worried I got a palmtop instead of a laptop.

The Screen: Is nice, crisp, and bright. I was worried about glare, but I don't think that'll be too much of an issue. No more so than my regular CRT. The only thing I don't like -- while it has a nice side-to-side viewing angle, the screen becomes noticeably darker and lighter if you move your head vertically. There's a very small "sweet spot" that you have to be in to see true black and true white.

The Keyboard: This was my other major concern. I'm a tall guy with big hands (not fat, just big). I can get around 85-90 wpm from this typing test on my MS Natural Keyboard. I drop to about 70-75 on the smaller 700m keyboard. The main thing that bothers me is the small "period" key. It was a truly poor layout decision to make such a frequently used key at 1/2 size. Still, though -- not too bad for a laptop keyboard. (As a comparison I got around 75-80 wpm on the zt3000 keyboard).

That's it for now... I'll update this thread with some more impressions as I move further into the laptop. I'll probably be replacing the harddrive now with a 60GB 7200rpm one I bought.

Oh, and the right mouse button looks kind of flimsy (and slightly lower). I might try to put a "shim" underneath, but I'm not exactly sure what that entails -- and I don't want to break anything! If there's an exact procedure anywhere, maybe someone can point it out to me! Thanks!

Yeep I am in the same boat as you/....well I haven't got my 700M yet...damn its taking dell a long time to build and ship. Any how it was hard for me to put down the X1000 too...its gorgeous....the screen is just jaw dropping...

but then there was a great deal with Dell plus I had an employee discount from my work place (partnership purchasing plan). But I think I made the right choice.....hopefully...I just loved that the compaq x1000 is just a beaut...everything that you'd ever need.

1.5 Centrino..
512 mB
80GB...
15.4'' WIDE SCreen...
Damn that is a great laptop isn't it....

ohh well I'm sur ethe 700M won't disappoint.

yeah my wpm on the microsoft keyboard is around 90 wpm and when i used the 700m my wpm dropped to 75 wpm, but two week usage it has gone back up to 90 wpm so give it some time for you hands to adjust and you'll be back in your regular speed in no time.

The shimming procedure itself is very simple. Basically, the mouse buttons are supposed to rest against mechanical switches mounted on the motherboard. On some machines there is a little play in-between the mouse button and the switch. You can fill in the gap by adding some sort of shim material. I used a couple layers of tape. The shim isn't very large...maybe 1/4" square. The hard part is getting to the backside of the buttons. To do that you have to remove the display, keyboard, and palmrest. Dell was nice enough to provide a hardware repair manual. The link is below.

That typing test... does the test give a yield in "kpm?" Because when I do it there are two bars -- one for time and the other for "kpm." Is kpm=wpm?

While you're taking the test, it shows bars for "time" and "kpm". Kpm stands for "Keys per minute", and measures the average numbers of letters you can type per minute (and dynamically updates throughout the 2 minute test).

When you finish the test, it takes your KPM and divides it by 7 or something to get your average WPM. It says something like "Your score: XXX keys per minute ~ XX words per minute". This makes the test a little more consistent, since "a" and "disestablishmentarianism" are counted differently.

well yesterday night i did the "shim" thing.

what i did was I took a roll of electrical tape, the black stuff and i made smalls quares and put three togther and placed it in the groove underneath the keys.

WOW so much better. No more travel and it's kinda quieter now too.

Just annoying that you basically gotta take everything apart
