What ebay offer? If you go to his link, you have to refer five friends, if all 6 of you buy one offer THEN you get the free ipod.

The only ebay thing I see is the ebay credit card. Which one are you referring to?

From what I understand, lithium-ion batteries are very different from the older NiCad or NiMH batteries in the sense that you should NOT discharge them fully before recharging. I've been told that the best way to make Li-ion batteries last is to keep the charge as high as possible all the time - apparently a "charge cycle" only counts when the battery is discharged to below 70% or so (i could be wrong on the exact figure).
As the lifetime of a battery is measured in charge cycles, it would make sense to keep a laptop plugged in, and to keep it plugged in.

I've had my laptop for almost a year and it's really only been off for a few times. It's mostly plugged in but when I feel lazy and surf on the bed, I haven't noticed any difference in battery life from before.

However, leaving it on all the time, I am more concerned for the internals. I'd much rathe replace a battery than the other stuffs.

I run my battery in my 8600 to the ground (abut 1-7%) each time, and did the same with my 5100, and the battery life has not changed since day 1. I wouldn't worry to much about the battery on a newer laptop, because the Li-Ion doesn't have the same problems as older types.

Yes Nick, it is wearing it down if you have the battery in at the same time that you are using the AC power adapter. Use one or the other, not both at the same time.
Charge your battery when you shut your machine off at night or when not in use.
I went through my first battery real fast, not knowing the above information.

Also, not sure what your laptop brand is, but mine is a Gateway and in the BIOS, there is a battery recalibration tool, easy to use. Other brands may have this also.

Dell doesn't have a battery recalibration tool thats for sure, I looked

I wish my 8600 battery would charge both at the sametime instead of killing my modular battery first everytime

after i read all posts for this topic, can someone confirm with me, how should I charge the battery?

1) plug in the charge all the time so the battery will be topped as much as and as often as it could?
2) charge it at nite while not using it?

also, should I charge for LONG HRS (15hrs??) before the first time I use it, so it won;t have the memory effect?

When hopping on the 4 wheel scooter to go down and checking the mail I put the lid down, talking to the mail man or reading the mail in a cheerful place takes time, bathroom, get a Ice cold glass with water already froze inside the glass so you don't water down the drink like micky Ds do, pour in some pepsi, get some chips and I am ready for another session. Open the lid and click on the chess board, click on the DSL, and a hi yo silver 'away'.

Tonight I did a all systems check which took a bit of offline time clicking on F12 before it booted, going through every device to see a month of sundays Pass's, including the newly installed 512MB Kingston to bring the RAM up to 1,024GB. yippe ki yo ki a.....we're in businesson a late saturday night.

the real answers on battery usage

There's a lot of conflicting information offered on the topic of what's best for batteries (lithium ion in the case for most of notebook users).

here's a great resource site that answeres all questions on all types of batteries: www.batteryuniversity.com

and for those who have ADD, here's the page you want tot read:
http://www.batteryuniversity.com/partone-21.htm (read the lithium ion column)

by the way

to answer some of the more common questions:

- it is more preferred to take your battery out if plugged in,
- full discharge for lituium ion battery is stressful on the battery, consider a max 80% discharge before you recharge
- full discharge every 30 cycles helps recalibrate the charge meter
- for storage, keep the battery at 40% charge with cool temperature... this keeps the battery much healthier. for an extreme prespective, a battery that is kept at 40% charge in 60 celcius (not recommended) will have 75% of its origninal capacity after one year, while a battery that has a 100% charge in 60 celcius will have only 60% of its originial capacity after only THREE MONTHS!
- Litium ion battery will age the day it gets off the manufacutring belt, and typical lifespan is around 2~3 years... so be sure to look at the manufacturing dates for litium batteries when you see bargains!
