SP2 won't work on pirated XP

Thread Starter
..... during installation SP2 will check the product ID number for the copy of XP in use on a PC and will not let itself be installed if that software is a version that has been widely pirated.

Microsoft has worked out the 20 most pirated product IDs and SP2 will not install and run on any copy of XP bearing one of those numbers.

"The situation at the moment is that we will block those," he said.
...
Mr Randle said Microsoft was keeping its SP2 strategy under constant review.

"Whether it will change between now and launch I do not know," he said.

Service Pack 1 for Windows XP worked with almost all legitimate and pirated versions of the software.

Only those copies of XP that used the two most widely pirated product IDs were barred from getting the upgrade.

SP1 did exactly the same, but with the difference that even registered versions got blocked.

I was actually watching TechTV's ScreenSaver life when they wanted to show a caller how to install the SP1 and their own system refused the install.

What makes MS so attacker friendly is because 0% of their software is open source so every hacker out there wants to prove to them how bad their coding realy is. That is why when MS introduced XP and claimed it was impossible to hack it, it didn't take more than a week after the release and a pirated version was out that bypassed the online registration and used a dummy key to get started. In the mean time there is more out there that gets even around SP2's registry checking.

As long as MS tries to come up with new ways to keep hackers out the hackers WILL find a way around it.

Both SP1 and SP2 do a product ID check once you start the self-installation file. If the ID is within a specific range, which MS determined to be used by hackers only, it will not install the service pack.

The pruduct ID is given when the registration key is entered. Thus changing the RegKey to a new one will also create a new product ID that may or may not fall into the above hacked category.

Yes that is what happened. SP1 also used some mechanism to find out if the product ID was not correct and for some reason end-users with a legitimate WinXP version where banned form installing SP1 because their ID fell into the category which MS determined was hacked.

Corp versions are no different than retail as far as functionality goes. It does make life easier though as you don't have to register.

Yea none of my cd's require activation or whatever it is that you have to do if you buy a store bought copy of the cd, that irritates me so much i never use my legitimate one

Same here, had it on for about 2 weeks now and no issues. The only thing that pi$$es my off is the security warning about not having the firewall up or the anti-virus program is restarting and the red flag pops up to let me know there is no protection.

anosis, you can turn that off. It's in one of the tabs. Advanced, I think. Just open up the Security Center and fish around. Think there's only 3 tabs, so it'll be pretty easy to find.

Security Center is a big resource hog. I turn it off even though I have all the services. (It's having trouble detecting Norton AntiVirus and ZoneAlarm Pro anyway, so it's giving me warnings even though I have all the protection). Also disable the service in the Services snap in.
