the athlon64 system is much, much better than the celeron system you're looking. The celeron is one of the worst processors available (although intel has upgraded it of late)
for just slightly more than that dell system, you can get a cl56 that is much MUCH better imo (see my sig) for ~$1700
post #4 of 22
Well if it has to be between those two definately the Compaq.

who make the CL56?
Compal, but there are many resellers. Hypersonic, Mitac, AOpen etc...

And the second choice is WAY better. And Dell smells...
Isn't Mitac and AOpen models of notebooks?

About the Compal CL56 model, you can find it on lots of resellers. If you search the forum, you will find lots of resellers.

For school, maybe nothing you guys posted can be the solution for him. He does _not_ need a powerful notebook, and even the CL56 is an overkill. Maybe he could make a better use of a thin-and-light system.

Now, back to Pacman: will you game on it, or you just need "internet, word processor and e-mail?" Is battery life important to you?

A mid-level Pentium III will breeze through web, email, and word processing. (hell, a PII with 512MB of ram will breeze through most office software running on WinXP).

I suggest you just spend $900 for a used/refurb Thinkpad T23 and use the saved $700 for books/food/girls. Office software technology does not advance as quickly as game software so I can guarantee it will last you 4 years.

I hate used stuff. I've been screwed so may times with used stuff. I'll by something new with a warrenty. just something light and thin that can do the job.

Dell computers rock. My 8600 runs Pro/E faster than the UNIX machines that are workstation computers...

As for the 600m, well, umm, to say the least, why is there a Celeron proc in there?

You shouldn't be going to college if you can't spell it.

I meant refurbished.

You can buy extended warranty from IBM on all of their refurbished items.

If you really want new, I'd suggest a Thinkpad X40 from their ThinkExpress program.

IBM is the way to go if you plan to be typing a lot and working in office software.
quality wise...IBM
mobility wise...i'll get to this later
between the 2, the compaq...much more solid and cheaper but not mobile (12lbs travel)

As I see it, if you can kill 1600 on a Celeron, you can add a bit more to that (or even subract) and get a pretty good CL56 from a few of the cheaper resellers (RJ Tech, Discountlaptops, Ibuypower, cyberpower, mwave).

Here is a sample config at IBP:
for 1635 you can have:
1.7ghz Dothan
512mb kingston
60gb 5400 rpm hd
128mb M11
cd-rw/dvd
1 year limited parts and labor..

enjoy!

windows system

the whole celeron comment?!@ well I have a compaq presario 2200 and its a celeron 1.4 and its just as fast as my xp 1900 AMD processor so, dont buy into that. if you want something to word process, and surf, go with a MAC, its virus free and most software is cheap for the pc or free, SUN and another company have free office suites for linux, unix and MAC plus you might find a school nearby that is selling all there G4's to upgraade for next year.

just a thought

Pacman74

Hey man. Not sure what Dell site you are configuring that on - but I found you a much better deal for the same notebook with wildly better specs (I will bold the major improvements that I see)

Dell Inspiron 600m

Pentium® M Processor 745(1.80GHz/400MHz FSB) 14.1-in SXGA+, 32MB Video
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home
1GB DDR SDRAM 2 Dimms
60GB Hard Drive
Internal 56K Modem and Integrated Network Card
Adobe® Acrobat® Reader 6.0
24XCD-RW/DVD Combo Upgrade
Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200 Internal Wireless (802.11 b/g, 54Mbps)
Productivity Pack including WordPerfect®
No Security Subscription
Dell Jukebox - easy-to-use music player and CD burning software
6-Cell Lithium Ion Battery (53Whr)
3 Year Limited Warranty plus 3 Year At-Home Service plus Nights and Weekend
Add CompleteCare Accidental Damage Service to 3Yr Lim Warranty
6 Months America Online Internet Access Included
Paint Shop™ Pro® Studio trial, Photo Album™ Starter Edition
QuickBooks® Simple Start Special Edition
Dell Media Experience™

The Pentium M processor should get you better battery life (probably a little more than 4hrs total) than the Celeron (worst processor ever) and will have a huge performance increase.

You're also getting 1GB of RAM and a Combo drive (CDRW and DVD). I included in the options the 3yr warranty (At home service) and 3yr accidental damage coverage.

Total price: $1,315.00 USD - free shipping too.

EDIT: Oops. Did not see that you had 64MB of video with the Celeron. In any case, if you add that the total goes up $50 to 1365.

A 1.4 Celeron should be as fast as an AMD-XP 1900. That's because the GHz on a AMD-XP 1900 is rougly 1Ghz.

Now if you're comparing a 1.5Ghz Celeron to an AMD64 3200+ then you are comparing night and day.

The 1.5Ghz Celeron is pretty much an actually GHz rating and is pretty outdated technology. The AMD64 is top of the line, cutting edge architecture and the 3200+, in terms of raw speed, will perform comparable to a 3.2 P4 (thus the naming by AMD). The AMD64 3200+ is much much much much faster than a Celeron 1.5GHz. There's not a person here who can refute that statement with evidence.

Now comparing the 1.8GHz Pentium M (as I suggest above) and the AMD64 3200+ is a much more fair comparison. In terms of processing power they're roughly equal, with the AMD64 getting a slight boost in some applications.

Though, for the price, the system I suggested, probably can't be beaten.

EDIT: And MAC is probably a bad idea because the original poster has a Desktop PC and probably doesn't want the hassle of running different OSes on systems that he will use conjointly.
