Speed Demons.. Pentium M \/S Pentium 4

Here's the deal....

I'm getting a new laptop within this month... and I am still undecided on the processor...

My options are:

1. Pentium M (715-Dothan) 1.5Ghz
2. Pentium 4 (HT) 3Ghz

From what I have gathered in the forum, the Pentium M is supposed to last a LOT longer in battery terms, while the Pentium 4 gives better performance overall.

What would be the noticable difference in the overall performance of the machine, should I opt for the Pentium 4?

Just wanted to know if it's worth having only 1 hour battery time for the <yet unknown> increase in system performance

Any and all comments and personal experiences will be MOST HELPFUL!!

why not AMD?

Go with the Pentium M

You'll get a smaller, lighter, cooler running notebook.

Performance bottlenecks are found in the RAM amount and HDD speed

A 1.7 Dothan will give you about the same performance as a 3.0 P4 and doesn't cost that much more than a 1.5, and still give you the battery life.

The P4 will give you a little more raw power but with it comes the heat, fan noise, and little time away from an outlet.

I have a 2.4 P4 desktop and my laptop is noticably faster in most tasks.

I can't quite find the one I originally saw a while back, but this should do for now

The Pentium Ms or Centrinos will give you more than twice the battery life.
They also run a lot cooler and throttle themselves back when not needed.
In game playing what is most important is RAM size (ideally 1gig) and the GPU type card you get.
The Hot ones are the MR9600 MR9700 and the MR9800

from experience, the 1.5 ghz p-m banias with pc2700 memory is about as fast as a 2.2-2.4 ghz p4 at 533 mhz fsb. The dothan is an improved banias with twice as much cache, so it should be around the same performance as a 2.4-2.5 ghz p4.

Depends on what you do.

Pentium 4 with HT is way faster in heavy duty CPU use, such as mpeg encoding or video editing. Downsides are power consumption, heat emission, and cooling noise.

Pentium M gives you a quiet, cool, and portable laptop (if you don't include a power hungry 3D card).

In 3D gaming, there is little difference between the two, because games are mostly GPU dependant.

In the present scenario, I would consider slapping on the MR9700 video card with 128megs to complement the gaming aspect of computing.

However, as from above discussions, my primary choice remains the Pentium M 1.5Ghz.

Although the 1.5Ghz would not last a lifetime, but I suppose it can be upgraded to a 2.0 Ghz, or more, at a later stage...

What's your take on this?
