Asus M6ne WSXGA (no, not a misprint) review

Earlier today I picked up my nice new Asus M6 laptop. Since I am in Australia I was able to get the WSXGA version. I have a Dell D800 here, but it is really an alternative to the Dell 8600 2.0 waiting for me at my girlfriend's place in the States.

It's early days yet, but I can give first impressions.

The Asus is significantly better built than the D800. It feels more solid without twitches and creaks, and yet it is lighter and quieter. And it looks much prettier.

My D800 is also WSXGA and has a very good screen, certainly better than the Compaq x1200 I used to have. The Asus is at least as good in early checking.

I'm not really a gamer, but I did run a few benchmarks. My Dell is a 1.7 Banias and has the nVidia 4200, so I would expect the Asus to be somewhat better. Here are the results:

Dell D800

3DMark01 - 9795
3DMark03 - 1162
PCMark04 - 3075
PCPitstop - 1062

Asus M6ne

3DMark01 - 11745
3DMark03 - 3041
PCMark04 - 3444
PCPitstop - 1320

In other words, the M6ne is smaller, lighter, better built, cuter and faster than the D800. I'll be curious to compare it to my 8600, which is a 2.0 Dothan but it looks good so far.

Cheers

Call me a pain-loving masochist, but how about posting a photo of your new M6N WSXGA+ for all of us Americans who desperately want what you have, but are forbidden by Asus' inexplicably stupid marketing strategy?

I'm supposed to be working, but I'll try get a couple of snaps off. I can tell you that side by side the Asus is noticeably brighter than the Dell.

Steve

Sorry about these shots, it's night here and I'm still working out the best way to upload pics to this forum.

Well, Asus have an international warranty, so it would be pretty to import one.

Here's a pic that details the difference between 15.4" WXGA (left notebook) and WSXGA+ notebook screens. It's quite noticeable.

I dunno guys, I'll say again that you should consider importing your own. My lappy cost US $1890 (no tax because I am taking it out of the country), with WSXGA, 1.7, 60Gb, DVDRW, 1GB memory, XP Pro and carry bag. I priced the same configuartion at DL at $2000 or so, except of course you'd have to add more for the screen you can't get.

Shipping via EMS courier would be US$80. And with the international warranty you should have no worries if there is a problem.

I got mine from a retail shop around the corner, but there are many places here that do mail order. Just try google.com.au and search for M6n or M6ne.

Cheers

Steve

P.S.
Did I mention you get a matching Asus mouse?

Just make sure you get a US keyboard

Hmmm, so I am seriously considering this importing... Is the notebook with wsxga sold as a barebone so that I could import just that and buy the rest of the parts myself?

I'm not sure, but I think not. I tried to do this with the place I ordered from since I have an 80G drive and XP Pro but I was told I couldn't.

I'll do a wee bit of research and see if I can find out more.

Steve

EDIT: I checked and can't find anyone who seems to offer a barebones M6N. It also seems that the mail order places are more expensive than the B&M shop I got it from. Go figure.

I searched for the WSXGA+ M6N, as you suggested. Several vendors, from down under, appeared, but the prices are all well over $3000. I'm gonna ask a possibly stupid question: anyone know the currency exchange rate for U.S. - Aussie dollars?

Take 10% off the price (there's no GST for export) then multiply that amount by .7. In other words if the price was $3000, take 10% off (2700) multiply by .7 and you get $1890. The retail price of mine was $3100 Australian.
