Hello, im a newbie to the forum as im planning on buyin inspiron 9100.
I have read the posts regarding these 2 screen sizes and still cant make my mind up. What i will be doing it the usual browse, photoshop (nothing major), winamp, Word, irc etc etc and play some games. Now what i need to know is can i drop the resolution for games without it looking garbage (1900 res wont make games too great, not the latest ones anyway. At the mo i have the SXGA in mind for these tasks but ive seen the UXGA screenshots and the text etc doesnt look too small at all... My brother has the WXGA and it looks ok , like 1024 on a normal display but when i dropped it to anything lower than 1280 it looked HORRID. Im wondering if this is the case with the SXGA/UXGA also..
Ps: Im hoping to get the ati 9800.
THanks

Dont see this anywhere in faq,
Does dropping the resolution on the wsxga or wuxga (for like gaming frames per sec) make the thing look ugly as did dropping the WXGA of my brothers...Damn ugly
I`ll think ill go for sxga anyway bcuz of the cost and it appears to be "best of both worlds"
And if i cant drop the res to help speed up a game without it lookin monstrous then oh well....
sorry for posting in wrong area also..

Buy it with WUXGA.I have a i8600 WXGA and a i9100 with WUXGA. In my humble opinion go with the WUXGA. You will love the WUXGA screen, because I was in the same dilemma.Initially I was finding it difficult with the WUXGA but once you get used to it other resolutions will suck big time. It is very sharp and crisp and ofcourse more viewing area. When you are spending some considerable amount of money on the laptop why not go for the best?! You can find more answers on this form click on i9100/XPS FAQ. Sakor has done a marvelous job putting it all together.

I have the WSXGA and it is the BEST! I don't know about WUXGA, but WSXGA is fantastic. You can view so much on the screen. Great for research when I am typing in Word and viewing a web page.

WXGA really sucks. I have seen it at the shops and it is really big. Don't get WXGA. Go with either WSXGA or WUXGA. WSXGA is great though, and if you are unsure about WUXGA, get WSXGA.

Too many acronyms...

So for games like Doom3 which i want in a nice res (1280 preferably, but 1024 will do plus nice level of detail) the SXGA will do the same job as the UXGA? ie. they will both drop down to those resolutions and still look fine (filled screen, no black bars) ?

Depends if Doom III supports widescreens. If it does, you could put it down to a lower res and run it at say 1280x800. Your framerate would probably be really low if you tried to run it at 1920x1200. If it doesn't, it will fill the screen but have black bars.
