5690 Monitor Trim

Hello All!

I was noticing when inspecting how the good ol' 5690 was holding up and saw that there was a buldge on the right side where the 2 plastic pieces that hold the screen together. It looks like it's spliting apart and i can't get it to clip back together. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem... I've never dropped my Sager!

Also when I first got the Notebook in January I noticed on the left side of the lid where the 2 pieces come together to hold the screen that there is no bulge, but if you lightly pinch only the middle of the trim that it isn't a tight fit. It looks tight but you can feel that it is maybe missing a little clip or has just one broken clip. Didn't think too much of it but now that the stress cracks are here from the hinges (very minor) plus the loose part on the screen and now the bulge on right. It's looking like when Sager put this together they didn't have it lined up right and they forced it and broke it.
I never noticed the splitting on the right but it may have been there from the beginning.

(Hope this link works, thx for the hosting info Wisefish!)

What do you guys think I should do?

Can't remember if taking the monitor apart will void the warrenty..... Dont' really want to do that. If it were just the bulge maybe I'd attempt it but along with the stress cracks and the loose left side of the monitor trim I'm thinking I want a new front trim piece!

I really really don't want to have to pay for shipping and do without my Notebook to fix something in my eyes is a defect or poor/forced assembly!

I do have a 3 year warrenty for this bad boy so I'm "trying" not to fiddle with stuff too much.

maan, 56 series have problems with hinges and monitor casing

when you try to push it in, it doesn't "snap-in"?

have you tried to get that metal clip from ram heatspeaders and installed it on that place? it should hold it!

Been a problem with pretty much everyone who owns a 5680/90. I just got mine so I hardly ever move it or close the lid. Its a shame that these fine looking machines develope these problems

Yeah I don't close and open the lid that often...It boggled me when I noticed it the other day.

I think that they need an all metal Back and Trim set!

It would take care of my problems and the stress crack issue...

I wanna be like this guy and "gently" tap it back together

The hinge design is piss poor on the 5600 series. You will in time develope "stress cracks", either on the back panel module, front panel trim, or both. What you have is metal anchors inserted into the plastic on the back panel that hold the screws (4) that hold the hinge. Adding to this issue is the fact that the hinges are to tight.

You cannot change the design but you can lossen the hinges to relive the stress. To do so you need to remove the top case from the bottom case. Seperate the front and back LCD panels. Remove the remaing screws from the the two hinges, including under the top case near both speakers. Then the two hinges can be removed. It will take several tries to get the nuts on the hinge at the correct tension, to little the LCD will flop over, etc. Clevos answer was to rachet the nuts tight, so tight as not to be able to rotate them while holding the hinge in one hand and using a pair of pliers, to move the hinge bracket. This combined with the weight of the LCD, it is no wonder why we have the "stress crack".

My 5660 is 2 years old and has been used as a "desktop". I only opened\closed the lid to clean the unit and still got cracks last week. It cost me $30 + $10 for shipping for a new back panel.

Your unit is under extended warranty, cracking the case open will void it.

you can always try the superglueing the cracks as they appear trick its suppose to stop em in their tracks

Today, after 6 months of owning my 5690, which, except for a few trips, has been working exclusively as a desktop, showed up a crack!
Not near the hinges, but about 2 cm above them, on the border of the lid, on the right side. I noticed that the crack is almost invisible when the notebook is open, but when I close it, the crack shows up. (So the pressure is made only when it is closed or when I am in the process of closing it)
I also noticed that the LCD protection seems to be falling apart on the left side... damn, now that I am taking the photos that I notice it with more attention... it seems that the notebook is on constant stress O_o

I am still under warranty, but the price of shipping will be something such as 70$.. so I am considering the option of opening the notebook to loose the hinges a little bit. Is there a tutorial about how to do it or something? I don't want to risk opening this "on the blind". =P

Pics 1 & 2: see the difference?
*edited out by ZuCa* Never thought ImageShack would replace my images with.. that.

Pics 3 & 4: Do you see any cracks?

Pics 5 to 7: Now the damned crack shows up! (6&7 lid near the kb but not fully closed, pic 7 completely closed)

Pic 8: The Crack - also notice how the lid is on stress, creating a little bulge, looking like the left side when it is open (pic1)

Pics 9 & 10: again, see the difference of stress on left & right sides...

I purchased my 5660 in March of 2003 and have used almost every day since. I carry it back and forth to school and work. I have no stress cracks. I think this is a 5680/90 issue as I didnt here about them on here from early 5660/70 owners. Clevo must have changed hinge suppliers during the production run because my hinges move very smooth and have not loosened since new. I covered the back of my panel with carbon fiber contact paper back in March of 2004 and there were no cracks then. I sent it to Sager for the mobo upgrade and it still works fine (hinges). I think they should fess up to not using the same parts as before. I think the plastic on the newer ones is thinner and they aren't using as good a hinge as before. With as much as my 5660/5690 is used you would think I would have hinge problems too.

Slot Load DVD drive

Just a guess here, but I'm thinking one of these laptops comes with the slot loaded DVD drive!

Pic edited out.
Interesting how this thread had more answers since ImageShack replaced my pic, huh?

An update on this shituation... I decided to do nothing about the hinge. Since I now mostly use the laptop as a desktop, I just leave it open 24/7, to avoid forcing it even more. The crack is the same size, 9 months later.
I am considering to open the laptop, because from what I notice, it might be because the screws are too tight.
