New type of popup? How do I kill these buggers?

Greetings--

I've been pretty happy with popup stopper (www.panicware.com) and AdAware (www.lavasoftusa.com) to keep my computer free of unwanted popup ads and spyware... but recently I've been getting a new sort of popup advertisement that popup stopper doesn't supress. The reason is because the popup doesn't seem to be another browser window, but some sort of separate program window.

The window sits on top of every other window on my screen until I press "ok" ... at the very bottom there's a link: "If you want your message to reach millions of people worldwide directly, just as this message reached you: Visit: www.antimessage.com; all in JetAdPro 2003."

Whatever this is, it *can't* be legal, can it? More importantly, how do I keep these things from popping up ever again? I suspected that it must have planted some sort of spyware on my computer, but Lavasoft didn't find anything (maybe it just isn't included in the most recent definition).

Any insights?

Thanks,
Flip

Messenger Service?

Maybe this thing utilizes the Messenger service built into XP (do not know about other Windows versions). Start > Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services > Disable the Messenger service (has nothing to do with MSN / Windows Messenger) I dunno, maybe others can shed some light on this

Unreal!!

Quotes from their page:

"JetAd Pro 2003 uses built-in Microsoft technology to deliver your message directly to desktops running windows 2000 / XP or NT 4.0 without the need of a web browser"

"Your message pops up ON TOP of other applications, meaning your ad WILL be seen! Click here to see an example of what the recipient will see."

And thats the best one:

"These popups are completely anonymous and virtually untraceable. Bulk email will cause you trouble with your ISP if you are not using special software to hide your IP address. With this program your IP address never shows up anywhere."

I'm glad I'm still running stone aged win98 on my system....

BINGO! Welcome to stupid included windows apps! It's windows messenger service all right, follow corrosion's instructions to turn it off. I used to get those stupid popups all the time until I turned it off. It's a new advertising scheme, they scroll through as many known IP's as possible and send these ads to them randomly. Annoying as hell, no way to block them except to turn it off.

Awesome - glad it helped. I used to get all kinds of porn ads, then I disabled the service, and no more. I think that is pretty sneaky of the JetAd people, because not many users know that the Messenger service exists and what it does (and still more do not know about Services).

Jet Ads needs a dose of their own medicine

Wouldn't it be nice if some really crafty hacker or group of hackers did a full on attack of every kind on Jet-Ads. I mean massive, sustained, invasive, intrusive attacks that are as annoying and disruptive as their ads are.

I have never used IM, don't ever intend to. I figure I don't need to talk to anybody who is so excited or impatient they can't take the time or make the effort to write out an email. Whatever it is I have to assume their attention span is so short they'd have forgotten what they were talking about if they had to write it out. Even then they'd probably misspell so many words or their grammar would be so bad that I couldn't read it anyway.

From the Microsoft website:

From the MS website: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...e/stopspam.asp

I'm on my university's network--but I don't think they would ever use Windows Messenger, and I decided just to disable it. It figures--I didn't get this spam until I left college and connected my laptop to my home connection, where my university network didn't filger this crap out.

Thanks for the instructions, Blue.

Disabling the service doesnt stop you from using msn instant messenger. Just stops the pop ups. Also people were doing group msn instant messages. You get rid of these by preferences in msn, then going to the privacy tab move all other users thats on top from allow to your block list. This doesnt stop you from getting a new buddy, just makes it so outside users cant instant message you, without you accepting them to your list. And since they arent adding you to their list you never get the instant message sent to you. I was getting 5 or 10 of these a day. I actually tracked down one of the websites that I was using this technique, and called them up. lol He had gotten about a 100 calls that morning and sounded rather frazzled. Apparently they paid commission for people who brought visitors to their site, and someone was doing that, when they werent allowed. Was pretty funny. He sounded like he was having a really bad day, apologized, and promised it would not happen again. hehe. Fun to make people sweat, when they do something to make ya mad. lol And blue corrosion was dead on there. Beat me to posting the fix lol

Why M$ decided to let the Net Send protocol cross-over a domain is beyond me. Chalk it up to trying too do much too often. I completely forgot about this 'exploit' when I installed XP and as soon as I booted it with internet up pops a net send ad. The biggest problem is Net send allows you hide the author of the message so you don't know who it came from. But you easily disable the messenger service and stop the ads. Stop by blackviper.com for a complete rundown on useless M$ services. I've disabled all but 9 services. Getting a firewall will also help, might I suggest Sygate's free personal firewall?
