trying to install redhat9

upon booting from install disk one of redhat 9, my system hangs at the cd process "loading oshi1394". do i need to plug in all my firewire devices for this or is it something else? any help is greatly appreciated.

It's a 'bug' in the install. You'll need to boot with the nofirewire nousb option. Failing that you'll have to use noprobe then setup firewire and USB after installation.

I think it will hang on USB during install. You'll have to build it into the kernel as a module to get it working. I think perhaps Xiphux could add some insight?

actually, i was away for a few days. but i'm back now.

you mean the redhat install cd hangs, before you get into any actual setup/installation? it's the same as with the other ones like mandrake and suse; there's something weird about the way sager builds their laptops. not to say that it's bad, it just makes it a bit more of a hassle for non-windows users.

honestly, i really don't know what kernel options you have to pass to get red hat working. i don't even know what options there are. it's been years since i've installed a binary distro. however, i'm downloading the rh9 iso now and i'll load it up in vmware and check out the install cd's kernel boot options. (it won't emulate the firewire problem, but i can at least see what kernel options could possibly be useful.)

... or did i misinterpret your problem?

Maybe I'm just fortunate, but I've installed RH 7.2, 8.0, 8.1B, and 9 and haven't bumped into this problem once...

Model 5660, fwiw.
