Noobie needs some help....PLEASE!!!!

Hey all,

I'm new to this forum, I've spent most my time in the Dell forum reading up about the laptop I've just bought (check the sig.)

I have done some photo editing and have a great interest for video editing, but know almost nothing about it. I learn real quick, and pick up on programs fairly fast as well....

My objectives are as follows....

I would like to rip dvds (whole and just clips/scenes), audio and all, and be able to convert them to avi, mpeg, divx, so on and so forth.

I would also like to rip scenes and clips out for personal use (I'm actually going to do a presentation on 'Top Gun' in one of my business classes, and would like to throw some scenes into a .ppt)

What software am I going to need? Something simple, yet powerful? I've got adobe video colleciton on the way, but that wont be for quite some time. And for what I'm doing, it'll be a bit overkill....

Any help would be great, thanks!!

To do video ripping your not going to need a video editor of any kind at all. I suggest you head down to www.doom9.org they have a lot of info on ripping dvds to whatever format your hearts desire. A good all around program is called gordianknot, which you can find tutorials on how to use it on the doom9 site.

As for ripping specific scenes you can do that pretty easily with DVD2AVI which is one of the programs part of gordianknot. You simply find the beginning of the scene you want and press the "[" button then find the end of the scene and press the "]" then save the project and use gordianknot to convert to a diffrent format.

mjolnir,

Thanks for the great info, I'll have to check that out. If anyone else has suggestions, I'm open for anything. Sounds like that gordianknot will take care of my immediate needs, so thanks.
