heat issue with the 5660

During some moderate gaming, my keyboard got really hot and I was wondering if this was because of a possible faulty fan. Does anyone know which vents are for exhausting hot air and which ones for intaking cool air? Or does anyone else experience excessive heat when gaming? I am running everything at stock speeds with the stock drivers. I was playing Spearhead and GTA3.

The bottom vents bring air in to blow it out the left side vents. If you're blocking the bottom it will get warmer. I don't remember noticing the keyboard getting hot during gaming.

I too am experiencing alot of heat on the keyboard. I just got my 5660 three days ago, and after several hours of gaming, the left side of the keyboard, over the exhaust fans, was quite hot. I am not a picky person, it doesn't really bother me, but I am concerned if it is a problem that could lead to damage. I was using it in normal conditions, with stock everthing. Any opinions, is it a problem?

After many hours of gaming, the keyboard on the 8886 gets kinda warm as well, but to be honest, it should not be a problem. Consider what is packed into that frame and it's easy to see how the outside of the system can get hot... I actually prefer it that way because that shows that it is dissipating heat. It's the same situation as with the fans... hot air leaving the vents is not bad, lol, it's GREAT because it shows that heat is not trapped in there.

i dont mind the hot air coming out of the side vent, like beebster said, thats good. but the keyboard getting hot in the area above the exhaust fans concerns me if this isn't common with other 5660's. if anyone else notices this w/ their 5660, please post.

Yup, my 5660 gets hot too playing UT2K3.
You have to have the bottom vents clear of anything!!!
Unfortunately, the vents end up on your left leg and you dont notice until the keyboard gets hot.
It does run warm even with the vents clear...
It would be nice if these inlets were on the sides, but I think you can see why they aren't!!!

From what I hear (somewhere), the heat is also vented out of the keyboard.

If you're not supposed to block the bottom, where are you supposed to put your laptop? Hanging in the air?

No, there's pegs with rubber on them that elevate the laptop like most laptops and allow the clearance to pull air on flat or close to flat surfaces.

Or you could build a cooler mod like mine :-) The thread with the pics of it are around here somewhere, but it's actually great for keeping the lappy cool. And I agree with the statement that the keyboard is meant to dissipate heat. Better it get out through the keyboard than radiate through the system indefinitely. Keep in mind that the fans clear the processing area of heat, most of the rest of the laptop is cooled passively. If the keyboard was "insulated", lol, there would be a problem. And if it didn't get hot, then the laptop prolly isn't working right... kinda ironic I guess.

When I sit with it on my lap, like now, I put my legs apart, just outside of the little nub-stands, that way the fans underneath have plenty of air, and it is stable. The side vents get my left leg a little warm but otherwise, it works for me. Another truth here is that during normal use of internet, word processing and such, the machine is totally fine, no heat anywhere on the frame as far as I can tell. And the fans kick on from time to time, the heat is only during game play for me. And the fan is running almost continually then, so I am sure the computer is doing it's job when it comes to keeping the insides cool. It was a concern for me at first, but I guess it makes more sense that if the keyboard was hot and the fans weren't running, then it would signify a problem with the machine.

Or if you're really adventurous you might try something similar to what "spires" did to his laptop. You could then also probably overclock the sucker quite a bit

Agreed, the 8886 I have doesn't get hot at all unless I'm running games or something of equivalent intensity. Just sitting here it sits all day with the fans coming on periodically and nothing gets hot, lol. Sweet machine :-)
