Sager NP4750 Review

Well, it actually arrived Monday but i've been spending so much time with it that I have not made the formal announcement.

I installed XP Pro myself ($84 at newegg.com) and it went smoothly and fast. I laughed at the 40min remaining bar as the 4750 blew through it.
I promised to do some premiere and photoshop testing. Photoshop runs very fast but i have no means on getting video on my lappy to test premiere. (waiting for guy down the hall to get his new camera in) and hopefully i will do some light editing for my schools tv station on the lappy.

Impressions:
Size:For having a 17" widescreen display I think the laptop is relatively small. Its thinner than I expected and their is not "wasted" real estate on the keyboard area like some of the toshibas at bestbuy. The simple case design diffinatly looks very professional.

The screen: F*ckin awsome. While normally I would say "enough said" this does not do the screen justice. A friend on my hall has a sony vio and I would put this screen against his. This screen is comperable if not better. NO DEAD PIXELS!!!! There is no light leakage. And there is so much real estate on the desktop!

Speakers:While at first I was dissapointed and had to say "what did you expect, they are laptop speakers" after seeing advice on the thread I changed the speaker settings to 6 channel and now I'm blown away by their quality. Some people assumed it was a stereo, but then saw the laptop and I explained hey, its got six speakers.

Speed:I have not benched but plan to. It beats my 2 ghz dell with 256mb ram and integrated EXTREME graphics .

Heat:With the new AMD drivers I idle around 37 C with HD at 36 C. I'm waiting to see during a "stress test." The heat is not as bad as I expected. Sure the left palmrest gets warm, but this happens on other laptops too. When idleing the fans are quiet exept for an occasional whirr about every 7 minuts. (I'm assuming I have the new bios and fan firmware but do not know how to tell.) I do not currently plan on AS5 but may later on. Oh and I have the 7200Rpm drive for referance if people are having heat trouble.

Everyone on my hall is jealus and impressed by this laptop from a company they have never heard of before and at least two people have begun to research sager for their next lappy.
If anyone on the Furman campus wants to take a look at Sagers handiwork PM me.

Thank you all for walking me through this process. I have no regrets on not waiting for PCI-E as the new pci-e lappy is too big for my taste and it will be too long before a compact one comes out. (I need a comp now)

I already bought a wireless mouse and a new targus XL backpack from bestbuy as a housewarming present.

Bring on Windows 64-Bit!

thanks man! what is the big difference between xp home and xp pro??what does it mean for students??? do you have to show a student card when you purchase?

from where did you get it?pct??

Lappy was from PCTorque.

The difference between Pro and Home from what I can tell is negligable. With Pro you can connect to a computer remotely and some other stuff. Supposedly XP is more stable and secure, but keep in mind, every version of windows is more "stable and secure" than its predicessor and look at how vulnerable XP is. I wish I could keep Windows 98SE. I opted for pro because of the price. (cheaper than a full version of home)

Purchasing the Acadimic WIndows XP Pro Upgrade was easy off newegg.com. This UPGRADE version requires that you have a Windows CD in your possetion from win95 through present. I got my HD blank and installed the upgrade myself. Its just like a normal install, except that you have to swap cd's for about thirty seconds while it verifies that you have an upgradable version. SO technicaly you only have to produce said cd for that time period.

To qualify for the academic price you have to input your student ID number and institution into a form before you purchase. You must be a colege student for this particular discount i believe. It took them less than two hours to process my order.

If you keep your settings at laptop/portable instead of always on you will see very low temps like this. Right now after running 3dmarks04 looped for 20times Im now back to my idle temps of 46cpu and 42hd on always on.

I wanted to run 3dmark04 looped to see how high my temps got and they reached 68cpu and 46hd not to bad and I wanted to see if my computer became unstable or shutdown or lockup, everything ran smoothly

any overclocking?

No overclocking yet, and yes I'm set to portable/laptop. What should I be set to for optimal preformsnce. I have been noticing some lag and stutter when working with bittorent and one particular folder. This is my first laptop. I would download the Omega drivers if is was not for the DVD playback issue.

for optimal performance put setting to always on , this will set your cpu to max ghz 2.23 all the time so you will not get that lag from cpu throttling from 800mhz.
When I set mine on always on, I idle at around 72 degrees. Anyway to underclcok it to make it go to maybe 2 ghz instead of 2.2 ghz ?
BIOS would probably be your best bet. Just throttle back the clock speed or multiplier a tad bit at a time 'til you get it where you want it.

Man, I got tons of questions for you. I'm researching for my first laptop.

How's that Mobility 9700 working out for you? Have you tried any gaming yet? I'm still trying to decide whether the 7620 or the 4750 is a better buy. I'm still not sure how the X800 256mb and M9700 128mb GPU's stand against each other. I haven't seen any benchmarks from anyone yet. If anyone else has info on this, please let me know.

Do you think the glossy screen makes a big difference? I'm doing a lot of photoshop, and need something that will make color correction easier. Also something that will be good to the eyes after sitting in front of it for hours.

How's the battery life on it so far? How much life will I expect? Will it atleast be more than 2 hours?

How noisey is it? My college allows laptops in the classroom, but will it be too noisey for my teacher to tell me to turn it off?

This is a pretty stupid question, but how hard is it to carry that thing around with you? I've never carried a 10lbs laptop before. I do a good amount of traveling, and want to make sure I won't feel like carrying around the kitchen sink with me. It can't be that bad, b/c I know guys on here travel with a 9860, and that's like 13lbs.

Thanks so much...

the x800 is a lightyear or so ahead of the 9700. The 9700 is a decent card, and should run more recent games, but the x800 will handle any game out right now at high settings. You still need a fast processor and enough ram, but otherwise, the x800 will be the keystone that makes it all possible.

Thanks ellement. Does anyone know of a possible replacement for the 4750? I probably won't have all the money for my laptop for the next 3 or so months. That's why I'm researching early. I want to get an AMD for cost and energy consumption issues. But that Mobility 9700 is worrying me. Will Sager come out with a next generation AMD machine? Should I wait? Please let me know. Thanks...

Did you say "light - portable - fast"

Sounds like you can and should wait for the new 3790 coming out this fall.
You have lots of time to research and save up.
"READ ME"
i'd deal with PCTorque for the sale as well... Good luck!

I want to underclock my laptop so that I can make it run max at 1.9 ghz instead of 2.2 ghz, is there a way I can do this?

Thanks for posting Jchanc04! It's nice to see another happy 4750 owner. Hopefully mine will ship next week.

Sorry, I did not get to this thread sooner, I did not realize it had been brought back to life. As much as I thought I would be gaming (being in college) I have yet to put a newer game on that C&C Generals. Nothing demanding by Doom3 standards. So I cannot answer those questions. I know the 9700 is showing its age and I'm really excited about the succesor the the 4750 with pci-e, whever that comes out (Hint: anyone have a release date). I mainly use the 4750 for Premiere. When our student TV station's Computer died, my lappy was volontered for replacement duty, putting together two complete shows until I got a grant to build a new AMD64 3500 system. (damn those usb and firewire headers are a pain). My idle temps have increased due to dust to around 41-3 degrees celcius, and my max load temps have increased to around 80. Early in the lappy's life I got to the critical 90 degrees while encoding a DVD and working Premiere.
Battery life expect almost 1.5 hours web surfing/ work processing and I was suprised to find out 45 minuts with Premiere. Sitting on the porch and actually seeing the sun while you edit is a refreshing experience. This thing can get lound when not set to use PowerNow! running at 800mhz. I have a targus xl backpack to carry it around along with a DVD burner and external harddrive and books, not that bad with the backpack. The notebook and powerbrick are not too heavy and the notebook is suprisingly thin.
