For video editing....????

hiya

am totally torn between choosing dell 8600 or m60 for editing...the primary purpose is running avid express pro for video editing - which would you recommend...it is a hard choice especially with the price difference...

replies would be much appreciated.

thanks

I would think 8600. M60 is more for CAD or workstation... don't think that's necessary for video editing. Besides -- my 8600 runs Pro/E extremely, extremely well.

Btw -- welcome to the forums! There isn't anything wrong with the M60, but keep in mind, if you'll be doing video editing, you'll need lots of RAM and a decent video card. No need to get a dedicated OpenGL card such as that found in the M60.

thanks for that...much appreciated...

couple of questions - what is Pro/E - are you talking about Avid Pro and Avid Express???? or some other editing software...

cheers for that

thanks for that axiom...just compared prices and M60 which I want comes out cheaper than a loaded 8600 i think i will be going with M60 - as it is also recommended on the avid website

cheers for taking time out to reply
thanks,

the damage looks like it is gonna be 4500 NZ$ - approx: 3000 US$

specs: 1.7 PentiumM with 2MB ondie cache
1 GB RAM
60 GB 7200rpm
128 MB GoFX700 video card

and the rest of the usual stuff....

heavy damage but i think worth it

killer card. Not sure what the vendor situation is out there in NZ but you may look into getting base ram from Dell and ordering more from a third party shop. Could save you some decent $$

and yeh it is worth it

thanks axiom...looked into that...base cofig gives 512MB {2 X 256 MB} - so getting 1 X 512 MB is additional 92 bucks and cheapest 512 MB RAM from 3rd party comes to $332...in comparision getting it from Dell itself costs $389 so there funny isn't it...NZ isn't that tech savy...end up spending more going the hard way

but thanks for that axiom...much appreciated

Damn... I wish a) I knew about the M60 before buying; and b) the M60 would be cheaper than the 8600!

I run video editing apps on my 8600, along with several different converters and stuff. Specs in sig. Absolutely fantastic machine. Great with the WSXGA screen.

i would so totally buy the 8600 if it wasn't for the alps touchpad. maybe the new one will be better.
I have no problems with the Alps... ah well.
Does the D800 and M60 use the Alps touchpad?
Good question... I looked at the Dell site but it doesn't say.

don't know about all the keypad stuff going on but my boss just got a M60 and it rocks....puts other PC's of same specs to shame...and i kid you not it is frighteningly beautiful.

cheers
