My Sager 3790 review

Thread Starter
So i received my 3790 on monday, used it for a couple days so far
tried to use every possible feature before deciding to give my review
I will base my ratings on 5 dancing bananas
bouncing Smiley = half a dancing banana
lick lips = 1/10 of a dancing banana

What i was looking for: a portable laptop, fast, long battery life, good video card. The first 3 automatically spell out pentium M and given my price range.....
I had to choose between Sager 3790 and Dell 8600.
Dell lost out in several ways:
1) sager offers the ATI 9700 vs dell's 9600 (a big decision maker for me)
2) the dell skips from the 1.6banias to the 1.8dothan
(the 1.7 dothan meets my needs and price and sager has it)
3) dell forces me to pay for the free XP software i dont need. I had the option of no software from Sager.
4) dell eats up about 120 bucks in tax, i paid no tax for my sager
5) everyone tells me dell customer service is horrible.

With all that said i give you:
1.7 dothan
15.4 WUXGA
ATI 9700
512MB RAM (i dont need the 1024 stick yet)
60GB 7200RPM HD
Intel pro wireless
cost: $1780

DISPLAY
got the WUXGA
First of all, NO DEAD PIXELS. (this alone deserves 5 stars!!!)
Only two resolutions I have worked with 1280x1024 and 1920x1200
No problems at all.
Played doom3 to check out video card. Loved it.

KEYBOARD
The keyboard is great but not awesome. I would prefer a "stronger".
It feels like i might break it if i tap it real hard
(happens when i get frustrated and go postal on the keyboard)

HARDDRIVE
Yet to hear from it for longer than 2 seconds.
What more would you want than a fast and quiet hard drive.

WIRELESS
Sweet. Nice connection to my wireless network at home. I didnt even use any of the optimizing software either.

CD (R/W), DVD (R)
Not much to say. Noisy sometimes but I have yet to see a quiet CD/DVD drive. I dont even need a writer on my laptop but doesnt hurt to have 1. Dont have or need the DVD writer so no comments there.

GENERAL
This laptop has one of the nicest looks around. Very light at the same time, just about 7 pounds.
Glad I bought the 12 cell. the slight elevation allows for easier keyboard use and more importantly the ventilation. Battery life is nice, around 5.5 hours of typical use. Didnt test with dvd movies.
The camera works decently with good lighting. For the most case its just an extra feature I dont think I will use much.
Good customer service, prompt emails when needed.
One NEGATIVE point here: The free software bundle sucks. I woulda been happier if I rather got free shipping instead.

My overall rating:

very happy with this for now. I was able to use my old dell inspiron 7500 for 5 years with no probs and just a few cheap upgrades.
Hope I can say the same or something even better about this Sager in 5 or more years.

Thanks for the review. I've been eyeing this model for awhile and with my old toshiba deciding to not cooperate in the upgrade process its about time for a new laptop. Also I was wondering if you could post some 3mark scores?

Thanks

LOL, I just noticed. your total cost is 1780. If you flip the 7 and the 8. It would be my cost after everything.

Lol maybe a "4.8 points" woudl be easier than all those nanners. Congrat on your purchase!

Got mine on Sept 21st. I ordered directly form Sager on Sept 17th (arrived in just 6 days!! ). There's a lot of sellers (PCTorque, AGear, PowerNotebooks) but they don't have the new 8X dvd writer with dual layer option for the system so I had to go with Sagernotebook.com, plus I heard a lot of complaints about ppl having to wait for a month!!. Overall great system, great wide screen (no dead pixels!), great gaming system, super fast shipping if ordered directly with Sager. Only complaint is its weak sound even with a good headset, but thats no big deal.
