Yet another Dell 700m review

Thread Starter
I recieved my Dell 700m yesterday, and I figured I'd post a few comments on it, since everyone seems to be extremely eager to find out more.

1) Screen-
Viewing angle could be better- the top down viewing isn't great, but the side to side is pretty good. I didn't notice any light leak, and there are no dead pixels. The vibrancy and the brightness is incredible! I can see it in full sunlight (if only the glare would go away ). Even in dim light, the vibrancy is not lost, and quite frankly, this one feature by itself beats most other laptops by itself. The dpi of this screen is excellent, and I like how small things are, especially after getting used to the SXGA of my sager.

2) Keyboard-
The keyboard is that annoyingly smidgen smaller than a normal keyboard, and the ,./ keys are very annoying, about half width and 90% length. The depth is good, and the responsiveness is supreme- no warp at all, and it bounces back with an excellent tactile feeling. The right shift will be annoying at first, but even after a single day, I'm used to it.

3) Touchpad- I love it! Responsiveness is great, after you adjust sensitivity, there is no wobble like in sonys, and accuracy is great.

4) Size and weight- the thickness was a bit thicker than I expected, but the length is a bit narrower. Thickness is about 3 cd cases in the bac end, but only about two in the front. Weight is a world of difference from Sager 8890 to dell; I've carried it throughout school for an entire day and it's not much worse than a small textbook. One hand is enough to carry it.

5) Fan and heat- I've only heard the fan come on once, and that was when I was installing SP2. Heat by the fan area is bearable on the lap, nowhere near as bad as sager, and basically feels like

6) Battery- Battery life is excellent, probably around 5 hours with half-brightness. I got the extended battery, and it sticks out about an inch in the back, but it's by no means annoying.

I haven't tested gaming, and probably won't be anytime soon. This is not my gaming notebook, that's what my big sager's for. Please ask questions if you have any!

Dell must be doing really good in the quality department for their lcd screens! What's your touchpad sensitivity at?

ah crap, i knew i should have gotten the extended battery. yeah the keyboard is awesome, you'll get used to those small keys within couple of weeks. I can type like 110 WPM on it now. Yes I agree the touchpad is awesome, very responsive. I have yet to have it lag or lockup like my stupid alps is doing on my 600m

I like my touchpad sensitivity at the highest, so that I can just touch and go. At default sensitivity, you'll really have to press, or put a massive area of your finger on the thing to register. Also, I've already gotten used to the smaller keyboard, and I'm typing at my normal speed with it right now. Only when I reach for the " does the shift key become a bit annoying, but that's it...

Yeah I personally think that the keyboard is a bit annoying...and the mouse buttons feeell CHHHHEEEAAAP but thats those are the only downsides to this laptop.

I Agree Keyboard is excellent, Mouse keys are cheap, but not enough of a issue to ditch the laptop I just hope they hold up a few years.
I Do wish I got the extended battery because it really only lasts 2 hours or so on the stock one. I'll have to order one of those eventually. This is really the perfect size lappy for portability and use. I was torn between this and the 8600 and I'm glad I went this route. Gaming isn't bad just not cutting edge. I've installed BF1942 and a few mods and it looks and plays great. I won't be doing much gaming, but its nice to know I can do some. I'll be viewing alot more DVD's and vids. I convert TV and Movies to Divx to save size and the 700m creates and plays these well.

Does anyone know if the AC adapter and battery charger come with the Dell 700m? I plan to get the larger battery, along with the wireless connectivity option.

Regards
