USB Backup Utility

Thread Starter
I am trying to back up my main C: drive to a Western Digital External USB 2.0 Hard Drive. Problem is that the backup programs that I used, Ghost and Drive Image, won't let you use USB because they have to backup in MS-DOS and that won't read the external drives. Anyone know a program that I can use to effectively backup my HDD regularly to a USB 2.0 drive?

I heard Acronis TrueImage found here can do what you are looking to do.

Acronis' Exclusive: capture and restore disk images in Windows ? no need to reboot to DOS, even when backing up system partition!

The best option seems to be to use the built-in Windows Backup system which can be accessed through the system tools menu or by running ntbackup.exe. It seems to work fine and it is free.

BACK UP SYSTEMS

ABS (Automatic Backup Systems) has some nice PCMCIA drives (6 G to 10 G, perhaps more now) that do automatic backups. You just put it in the PCMCIA slot and it does its thing. Even allows you to edit your backup as it goes and gives you a list of what's changed since the last time. It will post a reminder to do your backups. The drive is small, about the size of a pack of ciggies. Completely selfcontained. I have me whole operating system and all primary data on it so should my system get whacked, I have a complete replacement to transfer back on once I get the machine up and running or to put on some other replacement, temporary or not. I also keep a folder for transfers, so I can download major chunks of data to it. It's very handy. Cost was about $400 or so but that was 2 years ago.

if you create a ghost floppy with USB DOS drivers that support some USB hard drives. it will work I'm using Ghost 2003 with my Sager 5620.. to backup to cheapo USB home brew drive enclosure.
