just hopped on my system after leaving her on all night(as always) and as soon as i entered a couple of web address in mozilla she goes apesh1t with this extremelly loud extremelly eir piercing whine. wtf is going on? i've shut her down and am going to let her rest for a bit but this is bullocks. any suggesstions? its sounding like it was coming from the fan exhaust vent...

Sounds like a fan problem. When was the last time you cleaned it out (i.e. opened it up and blew the dust out)?

Sometimes a hair or something gets into the fan and winds around the shaft, causing fan noises - even blowing dust would not resolve it, but a partial deconstruction of the fan (or replacement) may resolve it.

Let's hope it's nothing serious. Does the sound change with the volume of air being pushed? I.e. can you stand the sound long enough for the lappy to get hotter and kick up the fans, then see if the noise changes respectively?

I was going to suggest fan bearing, but Myrkat beat me to it. Definitely see if you can't get to the fan and see if there are hairs wound around in there (but you're bald, aren't ya? Hmmm... have a wife?)

i've never really dissected my system aside from adding ram and a/b/g card so i first removed the keyboard for some reason. of course this was in vain. i flipped her over and started taking out screws. i removed every screw and was still unable to remove the panel covering the fans. so i pulled on this stray hair protruding out from the heatsink and out comes a hairball like i have never seen before, coming from the fan region. so i pulled it all out and everything seems back to normal. can't imagine where all the friggin pubic hair came from.....

update: 24 hours later now after removal of gigantic hairball and my system is running with the fan on half the time, and when it does turn on, it's not at full blast....i.e. i can't hear it from downstairs now! the system also feels faster....don't have to wait 60 seconds after boot to click anything anymore. this may have been the cause of my woes from the word go. sigh of relief....now if only i could figure out how to get directly to the fans....

If you get a service manual, you'll quickly say fugeddaboutit. It's buried. Get the compress air can, remove the cpu cover, and blow baby blow. (The fans that is, not the cpu. Make 'em spin.) Blow out the heat sink too. AS if you haven't lately.
