Modem problems

Thread Starter
Of all the "high end " components this machine has I never thought that a modem would be the topic of my first technical probelm. One moment the modem was working fine and literally the next it gives the message " The port that the modem is using is currently in use by another application. Exit any application that may currently be using the port".
I have tried un-installing and re-installing the modem and drivers, I have disabled all of the startup programs through MSCONFIG, there is no conflicts showing in the device manager.
I do have AT&T global dialer and AOL as dial-up connections and have never had an issue before.
I called SAGER and they wanted me to use the recovery disk and see if that would fix it - I told them I had too much info on the HD to do that without a guarantee that would fix it. They agreed to configure another HD and send it to me to install and see if that fixed the issue.
I pulled the old HD out, installed the "new" one and started the machine. Went through the POST and asked how I wanted to start Windows, I chose normal and it locked-up. I tried again and chose last known..... and it said a file( can not remember it now) was missing and prompted me to repair it using the startup disk. Got to that and then it asked for the Administrator password - I had no idea.
All of this for a modem!!!! I have the original HD back in now. I am using the wireless card for access at home, but I reallly need this modem for my business travels. HELP!

Mega Bummer! All I can say is that MY modem works, as I use it on weekends in the mountains. A lot of folks here don't even use it. My Control Panel\Phone and Modem Options says it's on COM3, even though COM3 doesn't show up in Device Manager. Also, it is on IRQ 17, which is shared by other devices, but I don't have a problem with it. I couldn't find a reference to your error message, but you might try to Google different forms of the message.

Run all the Diagnostics you can find. From Phone and Modem Options\Modem\Smart Link\Properties or the same from Device Manager\Modem, run Diagnostics. Also, from Control Panel\Modem Settings\Modem Helper, alternately try Safe Mode 1 and Safe Mode 2. Further, try the Modem Helper utility at the bottom of the same tab. Good luck!

This is exactly what happened to me today, I've spent 2 hours already to try to see what app. is using com 3 but have had no luck. I've re-installed drivers for modem, re-installed a.t&t software.
lightsey did you find a fix? or anybody have any idea's? I really do not want to do a reformat & re-install of XP. I'm going crazy over here!

Googled a bit:

Interesting troubleshooting tip (disable the other ports). For resource conflicts you can also look in Device Manager and fiddle with the View. (Resources by Type.) Show Hidden Devices is a fun one also.

Thanks MrMsyvc for the help
This troubleshooting tip (disable the other ports)- I thought the 8890 will not allow you to do that (disable ports) in the bios? I least I didn't see that you were able to.

Perhaps you can you disable them in Device Manager.

I tried that last night-no go. Looks like a XP re-installed is around the bend. I just moved the past 2 days no time for that now. On my Dell now, I miss the extra horsepower. It will be a couple of weeks before the sager re-install disk goes in. Dam I hate when that happens
