Of all the "high end " components this machine has I never thought that a modem would be the topic of my first technical probelm. One moment the modem was working fine and literally the next it gives the message " The port that the modem is using is currently in use by another application. Exit any application that may currently be using the port".
I have tried un-installing and re-installing the modem and drivers, I have disabled all of the startup programs through MSCONFIG, there is no conflicts showing in the device manager.
I do have AT&T global dialer and AOL as dial-up connections and have never had an issue before.
I called SAGER and they wanted me to use the recovery disk and see if that would fix it - I told them I had too much info on the HD to do that without a guarantee that would fix it. They agreed to configure another HD and send it to me to install and see if that fixed the issue.
I pulled the old HD out, installed the "new" one and started the machine. Went through the POST and asked how I wanted to start Windows, I chose normal and it locked-up. I tried again and chose last known..... and it said a file( can not remember it now) was missing and prompted me to repair it using the startup disk. Got to that and then it asked for the Administrator password - I had no idea.
All of this for a modem!!!! I have the original HD back in now. I am using the wireless card for access at home, but I reallly need this modem for my business travels. HELP!
