Cannot upgrade ATI driver - "INF error: Video Drive not found"

I'm trying to upgrade to the latest ATI drivers (from ATI's website) for my 64MB Radeon 9000. When I run the installation program I get the following error:

INF error
Video driver not found.

Now this is obviously wrong, since I've been playing plenty of games fine. My 5670 is using the drivers it came with from the factory (version 6.13.10.6178 date: 8/29/2002).

I don't understand what the problem is... but I'm sure someone here can help me!

You don't want them. 3.4 anyway. see here. http://sagerforums.com/showthread.php3?s=&threadid=3403

Yeah, skip the Cat 3.4's unless you luvvvv fiddling with drivers. They have been a Major Payne. The Cat 3.5s are supposed to be out soon. If you're up and running stable for now, just wait.

Okay, but how can I update to the 3.5's when I get this error message? I'm sure other people have had this problem. Knowing how to install the drivers, in advance, would be a great help.

I'm going to try this out with the 3.5 driverws when I get home. I just got my system last week (thanks again for all the help, Adam ) for playing Planetside and Dark Age of Camelot mostly, and for other new games as they come out. Only problem is that right now, the games freeze up -- hopefully the 3.5 will fix things. (I had the same problems on my desktop system until I upgraded the drivers as well, and the drivers on the laptop are older -- I think what the desktops were. I have the 9700 in the desktop.)

Hope it works out.

3.5 still not working

ive uninstalled properly and im still getting the damn inf error. when installing from device manager it doesnt see the inf, although its there ive checked, wtf why is this such a hassle with the ati drivers everytime?
I installed using the directions from http://sagerforums.com/showthread.ph...threadid=4290. This worked for me, and I now have the 3.5 drivers loaded. The version number I have is now 6.14.10.6360.

The bad news is that I still get computer freezes while playing DAoC or Planetside. Is there anyone out there that is running an 8887 with the 128 ATI M9 that is playing either of these two games and not getting computer freezes? This is a really nice system -- would be even better if I could use it for the games I play.

Thanks all for the help in advance.

modded drivers

are there some allready modded 3.5 drivers available for download?
I tried it with the 3.2 directions. I got it installed, but the comp freezes. I'm going to try with modding tonight (or over lunch) and see how that works out for me. Thanks for the pointer.

Someone in a different thread pointed out the following site for modded drivers for the M9:

http://www.s-seven.net/ati/

I haven't tried them out (he had and had no issues) but will likely do so later today.

Very true, sorry for the confusion. I mixed my numbers up, and thought the last one was the 3.5 version -- it's really the 3.4 version. I think my system originally came with 3.2 installed, so I might try the 3.4 and see if that fixes it -- I think 3.4 or 3.3 fixed the lockups on my desktop with the 9700.

Again, sorry for the confusion.

You might check the 2nd post on the 1st page of this thread, for a link to an 18 page thread about tales of woe with 3.4. I am running Cat 3.4s and have installed it numerous times from numerous sources. Be advised that:
1. All Cat 3.4s I have seen must be "modded", which in this case means references for the M9 graphics card must be properly added to the INF file in order for the drivers to install. (Modding can ALSO mean that different card settings have been tweaked in the INF, but this is secondary to having the card referenced in the first place.)
2. My Cat 3.4s, and all other laptop installations of Cat 3.4s I have read about, boot to a resolution of 640x480 (with the exception of the very first reboot after install) and you must either manually reset the res every time you boot, or use a utility such as MultiRes, which is what I do.

Good luck!

Yep, I read that thread. I'm just tryign to figure out all the different things I can test so that I don't have issues with the computer freezing while playing PS or DAoC.

1. Did you try to uninstall the old ATi drivers and control panel before you tried to install the new ones and, if so, what steps did you take to do that?

2. Did you ever install DX9.0a at some point?

1. No.

2. I have the release version of DX9 installed. Is that 9.0a?

Check this . Also, go to support.microsoft.com and search for DirectX for all the info.

It's DirectX 9.0 (4.09.0000.0900)

So I don't think I did anything to contribute to this problem... which is sorta comforting.

OOH! Now you've done it! This thread will be as long as the Cat3.4 thread in another day. I just installed these (Beta, probably) Cat3.5s and they work. No modding necessary. It's booting to the proper resolution and I've disabled my MultiRes pre-set option. The default Control Panel is not quite as elaborate as the one I had from Neutral Catalyst (no rotate-screen feature for example). Actually, I don't think the new drivers installed a new Control Panel, as I removed the previous before driver install (an oft recommended procedure) and there isn't a new reference in Add\Remove Programs anymore. I can always reinstall the Neut-Cat Control Panel if I yearn for more controls than I already know how to set. Anyway, tdd, thanks for the heads up. I already was going to nominate you for Sager\PC Torque tech support. You're knowledgeable AND user-friendly.

Oh yeah, we be jammin'! I should start posting this under the Cat3.5 thread. Perhaps I'll copy a couple of posts over there. I think these are the NEW Cat3.5s and not the Betas. I just compared file dates between S-Seven and ATI (via the 3dchipset.com link) and the 6/2/2003 dates are the same, just a bit misleading. I also installed the new Control Panel via the 3dchipset link and now I have FOUR rows of tabs, including some duplicates, because my Omega\NeutralCat RadTabs had not been uninstalled. Oh well, the more the merrier.

EDIT: The ATI originals are NOT modded for M9, so you need to use the S-Seven drivers. (Someone reboot the Internet! My response time is grinding to a halt!)
