M6811 - XP Home or W2K Pro for developing?

Thread Starter
Just picked this notebook up last night and using it as I type.

However, I have done most of my programming (HTML, Java, .Net, VS 6) with W2K on my desktop rig. Would you guys suggest reformatting this with W2K if that is my intentions for this notebook? Or would XP Home be suitable for it. I rule out XP Pro because at this time I don't have enough $$ for it and I'll wait for the 64-bit stuff in the future.

I've found all the necessary drivers that came on the eMachine Restore CD, so once I've got 2K installed that's not a problem. Just interested in your opinions on what's the better OS to program in on this notebook.

I do all my programming on XP Home edition. I don't have 2000 myself, but XP seems more stable then the 2000 installations I used at my school for programming. Seems to manage memory better.

I'd suggest XP Pro, since most people I know who program use this and highly recommend it.

I'm sure people will get mad it me for saying this, but 2k is just more stable all around. The only downside it has is that it can't run nearly as much as XP...

2K Pro may be a better solution - it would let you test more scenarios than XP Home. Especially with the user permissions and rights scenarios.

However, with the security push, you might have to stick with XP Home or do dual booting.
